Re: What I've been up to: new daily driver acquired: 97 Legacy GT wagon

perhaps Subarus aren't for you if $2500 is breaking your wallet. Subaru parts aren't the cheapest, and most Subarus for less than $5000 are either going to have a bazillion miles on them, or have a crapload of needed repairs.

With that kind of budget any car is going to be a bit of a crap shoot.

Which accounts for many of the cars on this network

But, in theory, buying a $1,000 SVX and putting $5,000 into it in solid maintenance "SHOULD" make it more reliable than a $6,000 SVX with a questionable or unknown maintenance history. But not always...

Guy at work had trouble finding a decent Forester (under 100k mi) for less than $10k.

Re: What I've been up to: new daily driver acquired: 97 Legacy GT wagon

Cars are all about purchase price for what you're shopping for, not just the cost of entry. This is one of the primary problems with the SVX; you can snag one for low cash, but if you want a car worth $5k in reliability and quality, you'll wind up covering the gap with work and parts.

Buying a $1200-$2000 car and expecting that it will perform, be reliable, and be as clean as a $6000 car is kind of crazy. Buy a heap, get a heap.
