They walk beside us and wear a badge!

Last October, Md put a 'hands free' law into effect for cell phones.
Late October Robbie got 2 weeks R+R from Afgan tour.
He bought a truck, tagged it and proceeded to drive where there are no snipers or land mines for a change, (Or so he thought).
He was pulled out of a line of cars doing 47 MPH in a 40 because he was on his phone. He told the officer that he didn't know about the new law, because he had just got back from 6 months in the sandbox.
The cop said "Don't you read the newspaper"? Then he told Robbie that he had to go to court for these tickets! Rob told him that he would not be there because he only had 2 week leave.
Robbie finished his 'year tour' and got home 3 weeks ago. There was a BENCH WARRANT waiting! He got back on saturday, but remained 'at large' till monday, when he turned himself in!
WTF are these stupid cops THINKING? They would crap their pantys if they had to live like Robbie has lived for the last year!
For some reason, Robbie thinks out policeman is an IDIOT! He has spread this little story far and wide in Military circles! I'll spread it other places!

Wow. That cop is, in my professional opinion, a douchebag. Not that there's any shortage of douchebag cops.

Rob's drivers licence was 'suspended' due to a 'failure to attend' at court. (sorry, i was busy fighting rag heads in the sandbox and missed your court date') Maybe Obama can put in a good word...

Maybe the cop got burned before just like the yocal D.J. who "didn't find enough eviidence to proceed" against an Afgan vet on leave who robbed a friend's store to the tune of $1800 b/c he was shell shocked and didn't want to go back but had not asked for help for the condition once. Sorry but I have no sympathy for someone who gets a secondary offense for talking on the phone which according to the law they must have been pulled over for primary offense first.

Then again, I take offense to cell phone laws as a whole. A cell phone is no different that a radio, food, coffee. a nav system or drunk as a skunk... If you can't safely drive while doing any of them you should be charged with reckless driving to begin with/ If your not unsafe then you can be doing all of them at the same time for all I care.

Just another example of states' rights not agreeing with a modern society.

Our guys are not 'allowed' to talk on a cell phone, but can be written up if they don't pick up the mic and answer a call from dispatch.
Every vehicle we have has a 2 way radio. ??????????????????????????!!!

Again, you don't need another law. Just enforce the one you have. If someone is unsafe behind the wheel, you have reckless driving. Doesn't matter what the distraction is. If it is a major offense you can go from summary to mist. with a reckless endangerment of another person. Our guys are told to pull over before picking up the radio per our insurance. Seems to me that is probably more dangerous.

This phone-y baloney is nonsense. Luckily it's only illegal here now for a driver to "intently operate a device with an informational screen while driving" (DVD players, inputting GPS directions, manipulating your stereo settings). Phones at your ear are not included (yet), cops around here talk on their phones all the time while driving.

I'm interested in seeing a study relating traffic accidents to cell-phone use versus whatever else. I think it might be surprising.

I know several state cops and NYPD cops. No one is ever pulled over for going 7 MPH over the speed limit unless the cop is after them for something else or you are doing 7 MPH over the speed limit in a school zone or contruction zone and someone was hit recently in one of those zones and the cops are "cranky" because of it.

So I guess we are to assume that no-sympathy man never drives his TVR over the speed limit.......

Who the hell wrote and voted for that law?? Wouldn't that prevent people from changing the settings of the HVAC on some cars? Is this a primary or secondary violation?

I'm not sure.

They just say if you are operating anything more than basic controls like radio, checking your GPS location, or call status then it is illegal to use "a screened device", if you are moving.
Basically anything with a menu or requiring multiple successive button presses is out, for example, dialing.
