99 Legacy Outback Trouble Code

Just bought this 99 Outback Wagon 2.5 DOHC with 195k on it for $1200, no rust super clean. Has a misfire in cylinder #3, pulled Code PO303 Engine makes a ticking sound like a sticky lifter, changed oil and added a bottle of valve medic thinking it could be a stuck valve. Any idea what I should do first and what the most likely issue is. Im hoping its not a worst case scenario like a burnt out valve. Car drives and runs decent, but is not running at its best capability. Seller said head gaskets were done at 130k, and more recently timing belt, pump and idlers. Plugs and wires have 50k miles on them. Should I replace the plugs and wires and or coil pack first. Could it be a bad or clogged injector?

Thanks

Dan

Re: 99 Legacy Outback Trouble Code

first thing I would do is swap a plug wire with another one and see if that makes a difference. Next I would pull that specific plug and look at it too. If you still have a problem then go further but I would do that for now.

Re: 99 Legacy Outback Trouble Code

You can try swapping injectors too.

Re: 99 Legacy Outback Trouble Code

Replaced #3 cylinder injector and made a noticeable difference. Car is running better with more power, but still has a constant ticking noise from the pass. side of engine. Its my daily driver and runs and drives decent.

Re: 99 Legacy Outback Trouble Code

Did it come with a volume control on the radio.

Ticking could be the injector as was stated. My SVX would have a horrible tap from one of the injectors after sitting for the winter. Got it to go away by running the tank down to about an 1/8th of a tank and putting in a couple injector cleaner bottles. Never came back.
