About to replace transmission output shaft seal. Any tips?

The title says it all. I'm about to head over to the shop to replace my output shaft seal and hopefully actually have a transmission that holds its fluid again.

Anything that I should know?

Mike

Its a PITA to get out. Just make sure when you put the new one in to absolutely sure it is completely flush with the bellhousing.

Pack it fully with petrolium jelly.
And coat the lips with the same.

Re: About to replace transmission output shaft seal. Any tips?

Get a seal puller, pry it out, put a new one in, coat it with something so it doesn't have any dry spots, and you're done!

Shouldn't take more than about 5 minutes once you have the shaft out. Also, I would look at the yoke of the driveshaft and see if it has any imperfections that might have caused the seal failure. If you'd like, you can remove the dust shield on the extension housing for more room.

I just realized you said output shaft seal and not input... They are easy but like someone already mentioned they really only fail for a good reason and finding it is key

I wondered what you were talking about when you said "bellhousing."

Re: About to replace transmission output shaft seal. Any tips?

I finally got around to doing this today. It was a very easy job. Getting the old seal out was a little difficult, but overall it wasn't too bad.

My car doesnt pee out atf anymore!

Re: About to replace transmission output shaft seal. Any tips?

Anyone got a part number for the driveshaft (output) seal. Is the seal the same on a 5 spd Legacy transmission (5spd swap) as the AT?
