SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

I was just lookin at a TM auction and noticed something odd about this motor...
The manifold has been reversed. it looks like quite a tidy job has been done on it.

That is strange, I wouldn't have thought it was possible. Opens up some interesting possibilities for FI.

Considering the angle of the manifold and the angle of the engine as it sits in the car, those possibilities will include making a rather large bump in the hood!

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

Even if someone does a custom hood job (FG or CF) to fit that setup, the car would look abnormally ugly...

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

Why would anybody flip it around then. It would be difficult to even fit an air cleaner on it. Oh I know, a mid-engine Outback wagon no doubt.

It's on a tube frame car, probably a FWD tranny mounted to the rear for a race car of some sort, Thats why they wanted to reverse it for better air flow.

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

the actual intake holes for the throttle body, are facing the same direction as the pulleys. No amount of photo flippage is going to do anything for that.

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

This is sometimes done when the engine is fitted into a (rear-engined) Volkswagen or VW-based kit car.

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

Maybe it was set up for a turbo, or pully mounted supercharger?

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

The holes will match up exactly, but there might have to be some modification for EGR hardware on US engines. This would probably not be a problem in off road or non US engines.

I agree that this looks like a dunebuggy or some other off road application.

As far as I know rear engine installations such as the Porsche example posted on here previously, the manifolds are mounted in stock position.

Many aircraft application use different intakes and most mount the rear of the engine forward to drive the prop since no tranny is required.

Here's a candidate for that engine.

Re: SVX engine on trademe with reversed manifold

Wow...

Why would you do that on a mid-engined tube-frame car?

I really wish there were a cool kit to put an EG33 with Porsche/VW transaxle into... (or STI 6-speed with rear output blocked off, and center diff removed.) Maybe even an X-trac longitudinal transaxle with a transverse gear set.

But an aft-facing (stock, not rotated) intake manifold actually makes even more sense in a mid-engine location, than front engine. The OE SVX exhaust and intake manifolds would make for a nicely symmetrical twin turbo system possible, something like a Ferrari 288 GTO, with a pair of top-mount intercoolers, feeding the two tb throats. With an ECUtek prepped and blue-printed turbo-ready engine... that would be a fantastic car...

I've not been thinking about that, or anything...

Even a naturally-aspirated airbox would be more easily accessed closer to the rear of a mid-engined car, I would think...

I wonder what car it is that the seller is building... I wish I knew of a nice mid-engined supercar-esque kit car that could accommodate a twin turbo EG33...

Here's the link to a company that uses Subaru engines in replicars.
