Best alternative auto transmission

In addition to all my additional projects (installing koni/gc set up, replacing all suspension bushings, end links and such, as well as upgrading the interior), my next major issue to address is the transmission.

Ideally, I want to stay with a transmission that will allow me the same driving/cruising characteristics of the stock transmission, however, be a lot more dependable/durable. I intend to start a high performance build, nothing too crazy, maybe something that is putting 300hp to the wheels when all is said and done, but this will be a long term goal.

So having said that I am trying to weigh my options in terms of transmissions:

1) Lan's Auto - I really like this transmission, it seems to address all the short falls our stock tranny's have, and at a cost of $4,000, it is a relative bargain if its as good as it claims to be. However, the major drawback is the lack of a warranty. I unfortunately cannot commit to such a purchase when the manufacturer is unwilling to stand behind their product.

2) Level 10 - I've heard a number of these transmissions failing over the years, and at a price of about $4,000, i am in the same boat as Lan's transmission

3) Subaru rebuild - get a 3 year/36k mile warranty on the work done, and approximately $3,500. However, after 3 years I am on my own and will likely be in this same position, due to the inherent flaws.

So, are there any other alternatives out there? I would like to mention, that although I am headstrong on sticking to the auto, I would be willing to consider a manual, however, about $4,000, is my max spending limit on this particular project, and from what I've read the only transmission that can give me similar driving characteristics (cruising rpm) is the 6spd, which is considerably more....

your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks - Chris

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

Brand new tranny from the factory is about $4,700 so that is out. I would check out LAN's and level 10 trannys for any kind of warranty. That seems to be your best bet or go manual.

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

You could try maybe building up a 3.90 geared Legacy transmission. 4EAT's available in 92-94 autos (if I recall correctly).

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

Seth, that's by far the highest price I've heard for a subaru rebuilt. I think it varies per region...

As for Lan's I've asked before and he said the units were sold without warranty...

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

Probably better off going with a 6spd swap if you're spending that kind of money.

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

That price is for a brand new, 0 miles 4EAT transmission. Not rebuilt.

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

If the Subaru rebuilt is a newer one it will have the alterations that should extend it's life. With the addition of a good cooler and remote filter there's no reason to expect it to die so quickly.

Not yet, YT was working on a phase II auto awhile ago but said the time spent on wiring was ridiculous... If that ever comes possible, next would be working on the paddle shift autos. So in other words, its a very, very long ways away

Re: Best alternative auto transmission

I got ahold of the service paperwork. they paid over $4k for the trans and labor. It was installed at 106k miles. I bought the car with 152k miles and it currently has 163k miles.
