SVX Shopping.

I hope you all dont mind some questions.
Sometime after the summer ill be looking to buy a SVX (after my back heals from surgery), I am a long time subaru owner, and now have a Outback. IS ther any year that stands out more then others? From reading www.cars101 they all seem to be basically the same except for equipment and the option of awd vs fwd. I am fully aware of the tranny and wheel bearing issues. We think my day of driving a stick are over, as much as i would like one with the conversion. It seems like the engine is fairly robust, is this true?
What is the service interval for the timing belt, and what kind of nightmare (or dream) is it to change. Are the cars electronics aging gracefully? Does the car have any other weak points i should be aware of, or do they tend to be the usual bullet proof sooby construction. Do they have to run on premium, and about what is real world mileage (im just curious, as i dont really care, this would be a second car).

Thanks

nipper

Welcome to the Family! I see you've already made some good posts.

My driving is about 40% city, 60% hiway, I'm getting 21-24 mpg on both of my stock '92s. I've been lucky enough to not know too much about maintenance on these cars yet.

www.ecutune.com makes a reprogrammed ECU for us. There are two program modes built into it, one allows for the use of 87 octane fuel. The Ecutune module will only work on 92-95 SVXi. Ecutune has an active member (longassname) here on our forums. Go to their website to check it out.

besides from that...i guess if you would probably look into a 94+ since they have the upgraded parts for the tranny (correct me if i'm wrong anybody)

The timing belt is a dream to change.

real world mileage on a well maintained svx should be 20-22 city, 25-27 highway.

Electronics seem to be aging fine, mostly light bulbs behind the buttons blow. Occasionally a security system mysteriously bites the dust when the battery is left dead for a long time.

Welcome to the site. You should run premium gas unless you go with the mod mentioned above. I would suggest getting a 94 or newer because of the transmission issues. The fixes were done to them and are slightly improved. I would suggest getting on a tranny filter and cooler when you get yours if there is not one on it. Good luck with the purchase.

Back surgery - been there, done that. No fun. Getting in and out of a car with a bad back can be a chore, and the SVX sits low, making it especially difficult. Once in, it is comfortable, even on long trips. As the SVX ages, we see the typical problems, seat belt malfunctions on '92-'93 models, sticking sun roof panels, electric window actuators that bite the dust, sun visors that droop, instrument lights that fail and an electrical gremlin here and there. On the other hand, the cars are probably as durable as any other their age on the road. Engines are almost bullet-proof, but gaskets get brittle and leak, the O-ring in the power steering system goes bad, catalytic converters gum up, and shocks/struts get weak. Meticulous maintenance is the key to a happy SVX. Timing belt changes every 60K miles. Transmission power flush every 30K miles. Oil & filter changes every 3K miles. Clean air filter always in place. Brake pads & rotors in good shape. If you spend a little extra doing maintenance you will spend a lot less doing repairs. Best wishes.
