Slipping Tranny

Sorry I relize there are alot of tranmission questions on here and I should search but couldn't find the exact awnser I was looking for. My car has just over 137,000 and the tranny just started slipping yesterday between 1st and 2nd. Will the Brake Band adjustment fix this? Also am I doomed to have to replace this trans or will it last a little longer? Also is it gonna hurt it to drive it like this?? Should I park it until I can fix it?

Thanks in advance ,Joe

i think the brake band adjustment only helps between 2nd and 3rd gears (not absolutely positive) and yes it will hurt your tranny to allow the slipping. if you can keep it from slipping you can prolong the inevitable, but start looking for a replacement soon.

Tightening the brake band will reduce the 1st to 2nd slip.
Try starting out in 2nd to be sure it is 2nd slipping. If it is then do the brake band adjustment.

Also, add a bottle of Sea Foam Tranny Fix stuff. I just put it in my XT yesterday and the shifts are now amazing!!! Almost new Chevy like!

This is what is wierd to me. I drove it again last night and if I use 3rd instead of "D" and use the manu button it doesnt slip at all it acts just like how it did before it started slipping. But it I start out in drive no matter what it slips. Is this wierd or is it normal??

Thanks, Joe

Sounds like you are slipping in 1st gear. Shifting to 3rd and using the manual button forces the tranny to skip first gear completely. When you shift back to D, the tranny reverts back to normal and starts off in 1st gear.

To me it sounds like it only slips while shifting from 1 to 2. Starting in 2 (manual mode) would be fine because the shift has already taken place.

I believe the band brake engages during that shift so it may need tightening.

Either way it's time to start saving for a replacement tranny.

Candidate for band adjustment.

This is the band needing adjustment. Do the whole thing, tighten it up with a small spanner, then back the screw off three full turns. I think it will fix it OK. As long as the band has not been slipping too bad, it may not be end of the trans.

Harvey.
