Remove the exhaust system and driveshaft first.

Then I removed each side's rear suspension. I was planning to replace all the bushings anyway so it made sense to me to do that first. With the suspension loose, I could pull the axle out of the hub and lay the end of the axle on a clean mat. When both sides were disconnected, I removed the front diff mount which I believe has three bolts and removed the two rear nuts. Then I used a floor jack to slide the diff forward out of the mounts and lowered it out of the car.

Only after the assembly was out, did I separate the axles from the diff.

There are many ways to do it. This just happened to work best for me.

I would tend to doubt it. You'll at least have to loosen one side to get enough clearance to get the first axle out.

Those splined shafts are pretty long.
