CV Axle replacement - big problems

We got them both out, and the new ones in with what seemed to be no problems at all. We were using the directions from the "How to" section of this site. Well, when we were going on the test drive, the car was barely moving, and it was almost like the tranny was slipping bad. Well we quickly took it back, and took them off again. Well, it seems that somewhere in the outer boot, it got disconnected. Do they just disconnect? Or is it really broken? We even took off one of the outer boots, and noticed that we could pull the inner shaft out from the part that goes into the hub to turn the wheel. What do you think could have gone wrong?

I should never work on my cars, because something always goes wrong.

Any insight on this would be very helpfull.

I think the axles you bought were not assembled correctly. The axles should not come apart. The inner joint is a tripod set-up and there is supposed to be a snap ring that holds the tripod at the end of the shaft. If the snap ring is missing, then that could be the problem. If the snap ring came off and sitting in the grease in the booty then the axle was tooooo short. Were these after market axles or remanufacturered or Subaru?

That's what I was kind of thinking, because I followed the steps, and everything seemed to fit OK. They were A1 remans, I got them from rockauto.com - who I have had excellent sevice/parts from before

I think I would contact them and tell them what is happening. Maybe they have some idea if that should have happened, or maybe something is wrong. Good Luck.

I just re-did mine last week and I feel the same way. In fact I have sworn off working on my car all together. I bought Remans from NAPA and got two wrong axles. The first was completely wrong and I noticed before I left, the second I noticed that it was too short luckily before I drove it. The only reason why I caught it was when I torqued the axle nut down it actually pulled the drive shaft out of the transfer case!. Every time I work on my car it's out for a week and few people can help (with the exception of the Subaru Dealership who won't tell you anything until you bring your car in) or the great people that contribute to this site.

You guys DID remember to pound the metal dust cover things off your old axles, and install them onto your new ones, right????

Thanks for the replies.

Chicane: NO, I didn't know anything about them. Unless you are talking about the ones that cover the axel nut, on the very outside, then yes. Otherwise, could you possibly explain further?

I put the old ones back in (only took me about 20 min per side - I had to do this a few times). And they work fine, but still clicking. Hopefully I can get my $ back from where I got them. Thanks for the help.
