XT6 Problem

Okay, so I've decided to keep my XT6 for a work beater. But it's had an issue for quite some time that concerns me, and numerous "Subaru Experts" have been left clueless by it. Thought maybe some of the real Subie experts in here may be able to help me.

Every once in a while, the car just decides not to start, and some kind of alarm sounds in the engine bay. And when I say doesn't start, I mean nothing, no cranking over or anything. When it does this, it may last for a minute, or a day. Unfortunately, it's never done it long enough for me to get it looked at. I've looked at a few things, but everything seems okay. Fuses are all right and the starter is nice and snug. And, as far I can tell, there is no aftermarket alarm. Anyone ever seen this, or have any ideas?

Also, while I'm at it, what other Subarus have wheels that will fit the XT6. I've seen one with Forester wheels, but I want to make sure I get wheels that fit right. Mine are pretty chewed up. I may have a line on some cheap XT6 OEM wheels new in the box, but I'm not sure.

Thanks.

First the easy one...any 5 lug Subaru wheel BESIDES the SVX will fit the XT6.

As for the no start sometimes, check the conectors in the wiring harness under the dash, especially the one coming from the key switch....most electrical problems with the XT6 will be a short in one of the connectors that are just above your feet when driving it.

Come over to the XT6 web site in my sig. it's not as busy as here, but has a few hard core XT6ers on it that are willing to help.

We would diagnose that as starter contacts at work.

Yeah that's what I thought it was too but it typically isn't. It is usually a wire in the ign system. There's a post on it where Huck sent ya. Mine still does it. Now have 3 starters though. Haven't tried the wire thing yet as my wiring skills are not so good. I'll probably just put a starter button in myself. It seems to be a common solution for the XT as they all seem to develop this issue.

You mean to tell me that you actually work on XT's & XT6's at your dealership? I can't find a single Subaru dealership in Maine that will even look at it. Mike, I think you and your boys need to come up this way and teach these Maine dealers a thing or two!

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. I never knew this honkin'/beepin' thing was common. Actually, the last few times I played with the car, it didn't honk/beep at me, it just woudn't turn over the first couple of tries. Hopefully, I'll have it back home next week and can start working on it.

Oh, and Huck, thanks for the link to the XT site. I'd heard legends of the XT site, but never actually found the golden land itself. I'll join up and poke around a bit, see if I can't find anything else to help me out.

We'll be glad to have you over on the dark side hopefully it'll grow to be "THE" XT XT6 site
