I would look for something to back that up before I just made a blanket statement like that. Sure, if there's convincing evidence that petroleum-based products like that aren't good for you, then by all means stay away from them. But how long have we been using Vaseline and such? Nearly a century?

Edit:

After a quick look on the web (with Google, which Doug never would have thought of using), I found nothing to support the claim that petroleum-based lip balms were harmful in any way. I did find some claims that skin isn't able to breathe or excrete quite as well when a petroleum product is applied, but no evidence to support the claims. Besides, I thought that was the point. You put a petroleum-based lip balm on to keep your lips from losing moisture.

Actually, one lady went so far as to recommend this process:

"Put a cracker in a cup of water and another cracker in a cup of baby oil. Let them sit a minute. Watch what happens to the cracker (representing your skin) in water. Now, take the cracker out of the baby oil and break it in half. Puzzled... well, you could keep that cracker in there from here until the end of the world and it'll still be crisp just like it popped right out of the box!"

What's her point? That water dissolves skin and mineral oil doesn't? That skin is similar to a baked or fried snack product?

It's ridiculous pseudo-science like this that drives me up the friggin' wall. What's my point, after all this? If you think something's bad for you, well, maybe you're right. But for crying out loud, look into it first before you come to your conclusions.
yeah svx_commuter..don't blanket a statement like that. drinking more water won't help...BUT drinking beer is the solution!!!!!!!!!!!
everytime you have an urge to apply petroleum-based lip balm have a beer or two. after a while, you won't feel the need for lip balm.

BAN the BALM, Drink Beer Instead!!!!!!

Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! You guys are right I have no proof. I have edited my prior post and I absolute agree with you that any product which could be harmful has been thoroughly tested and removed from the market or never even brought to the market in the first place. It is just a personal preference of mine to try and keep crude oil products off and out of my body.

"Pain is weakness leaving the body."

Remember that for your own sake...

This is the last thing I thought I would see on a car forum...ROFLMAO!

Perhaps you should throw away your current chapstick...if you have it, you can use it. And if you really have trouble...try finding a chapstick that you do not find appealing to use so you will be less likely to want it. Or perhaps, try putting the chapstick in a drawer or cabinet that is on the opposite side of the house from where you normaly sit, then you will have to get up and walk to the chapstick to use it, therefore you will use it less.

I used these techniques to quit smoking.

It didn't work worth crap for me but hey...worth a shot right?

well the main reason i have to quit is because of the coast guard, in boot camp you can only have certain things in your pockets at any certain time, so basically if i wait until i go to quit it will just be even more stressful...idk maybe cold turkey maybe just gradual im stuck lol, ill figure it out hopefully

I agree. I mean, give me a chain-smoking, alcoholic with yellow teeth and a beer gut any day. Yummy!

But seriously, I never use ChapStick ... it actually dries out my lips. But everyone's chemistry is different. For some people (*cough*driverdave*cough) using ChapStick every other minute produces soft, dry lips. So ... who knows?

Switching to lipstick would certainly cure your boot camp problem lickety-split...

I occasionally put on some sort of lip balm in the winter. I drink a lot of water during the day, but in the winter I still end up with dry, cracked lips. No fun.

LOL Rob, that was lame...first off, I'm not gay, and nor do I have anything against anyone who is. Obviously you have a problem with it but whatever it's not part of this discussion. I use ChapStick. The medicated kind....none of that fruity tutie lip smackers crap. I'm sorry if my lifestyle offends you. well not really...when my tube runs out though I'll be sure to make a road trip to throw the empty on your lawn....WHILE blasting some Tupac on the way by.

No dude, keep reading it. I don't have a problem with gay people, in fact, I used to be friends with quite a few of them (haven't seen em in a while but they liked cars heh). Anyway, that isn't it. Reread it.

Lucky for you that Rob doesn't like Chapstick or he might want to be your friend. Lucky you! Then again, cause your not gay you safe. He did say "I'd rather hang out with the gay man." Well your two times lucky. No worry about Rob wanting to be your friend, your safe.
