Unhappy Axle replaced- It won't move

Thanks to all of your assistance, I replaced the front right axle today.

PROBLEM: It won't move.

It seems as though the brakes are on. However, no brake light is illuminated on the dash. The odor of over-heated pads and view of smoke is present.

The brake pads were replaced and calipers rebuilt about 2000 miles ago.

When I press the brake to select a gear I sometimes hear a clicking and feel a vibration. There is some hesitation when reverse is selected. I can rock the car back and forth. Though , it will not move any moderate distance.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED- as always.

THANK YOU

Some more info......

When neutral is selected, the motor revs without transmission engagement. However, the car can not be manually pushed in neutral.

When the axle broke at the inner u-joint, there was a violent jolt. I had to alternate between reverse and drive to get the car into my garage. This was done in spite of the jolts.

I have tried pulled the ABS fuse to reset the ABS and release the brakes- but with no success.

Is there a way the parking brake can be released from beyond the handle.

This is a shameless grasp for hope prior to having it towed for transmission repair.

Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

THANKS

The axle was ordered from Raxles.com

The front wheels turn freely by hand. Consequently, I am not sure that binding is being caused by too short of an axle.

Any other thoughts- any.....

THANKS

Do you have any idea why the axle broke. This is the first time I've heard of it on the SVX. I don't want to cause alarm, but I'm wondering if your differential self destructed and can't turn.

At this point I would jack up each corner and see if any one wheel is binding - just chock the tires and put it in neutral with the parking brake off manually spin the tire and see exactly where the problem resides. I've never tested a SVX this way, but if you can get the whole front of the car up, test, and then the whole rear, the opposing tire should rotate opposite direction to the one being manually turned.

The front right axle broke at the inner cv-joint. I can turn the front wheels by hand. They do turn in opposite directions. I will try this with the rear wheels this evening.

Is the rear differential a big job, money and/or labor?

THANX

A used rear diff should not cost you much and it's not a big deal to replace (the only special tool needed is to remove driveshafts).

However it is very unlikely the diff is bad - they are very very reliable. And it would not smell like burnt brake pads either.

Pinched brake line?

First:
Jack up the front of the car (both wheels off the ground) put it in nuetral, and see if either wheel will turn, if one won't and the other will, check the side that won't turn, as it sounds to me like you've got a caliper stuck, which could have caused the axle to break in the first place.
If not that then your front diff has a problem....I betting on the stuck caliper, as the bad front diff wouldn't explain the broke axle.

So many open ended threads!

Did you get the problem resolved? When I replaced my front axles one of the replacements had a seal on it. Didn't think much of it when we installed. Once installed the wheel would barely turn. Turns out the seal dug into the hub when we tightened the nut. Took out the seal and all was well.
