FWD temperory fix...

Ok before i get a mean coment for asking this I just want to say that I searched before asking this and wasn't happy with the results I found so i have to ask...My AWD is binding when I turn and it seems to be getting worse, so I put the FWD fuse in to see if this would eliminate the problem and it did(as I thought it would). So now all I have to ask is, what exactly happens if I were to drive it around in FWD mode, just around town?? How long do you suggest I drive like this? And I'm guessing the AWD transfer cluches are screw up, do ya'll agree? And do you think I should take it to an oil change place and tell them to put some friction modifier or marvel mystery oil in the rear end(just a little amount)? Any help would be greatly apprieciated...I'm worried about this...

Thanks for any help

AWD binding is a common enough SVX problem - I can't imagine why you couldn't find any posts on it.

Anyway, the 'rear end' has nothing to do with the binding (well, typically) - the transfer clutch assemby is in the tranny itself and not the diff.

Inserting a fuse into the FWD slot simply tells the car not to transfer any torque to the rear wheels - effectively ignoring the rear and making your car front-wheel-drive only.

As far as I know, this isn't particularily damaging to the car. I know of one prominent member who drove his car for a few thousand miles on a very long road trip with the FWD fuse in. How long can you drive with that fuse in without damaging the car? I dunno.

But I do know that the process for trying to iron out the binding has been posted on this site before. It involves, in part, driving around in tight figure-8s, but I don't remember anything else about it.

I just did a search for 'AWD binding' and found that the consensus is that the tight figure-8s can temporarily make the problem go away, but that the real issue is duty solenoid C failing. The part is somewhere between $75 and $90 and will take 2-3 hours to replace.

Get some limited slip differential additive and pour it in your tranny. The binding will go away.

The binding might go away, but the the other clutches might go too. Be very cautios when adding stuff the tranny was not designed for. If the stuff reduces friction (as it should to eliminate the binding), the clutches may start to slip even when fully engaged. Slipping clutches equals new tranny in a month.
