Question OEM tire change

Anyone out there recall when/why they went from a OEM tire size 225/50-16 to a 205/55-16? Was it rear wheel bearing related?

I once had a set of 215/55-16's on for a year and they seemed to give me a little extra clearance (we have a very steep slope on the crown of the driveway) but didn't seem to make any difference from a handling/noise perspective.

Went back to the 225's (Eagle RSA) and they are wearing nice & even, are pretty quiet and seem to work well dry, in the wet or snow.

Hmm. I think they went to 215/55-16 with the '97s and for no particular reason. I'm thinking of changing for a little better ride and pothole protection.

At Reading, Harry (newsvx) mentioned an explanation that he had heard. Allegedly the tire manufacturer could not supply the 225/50 tires that year???

Also, this is the first time I heard that the wheels were also narrower (7 vs. 7.5") on the 97.
