Front end banging definitely solved
If you saw the other thread you know how frustrating it was... well, it's been 1,000 miles now and the noise has not returned. And, I was able to replicate & correct the problem on the OTHER side of the car.
I hereby decree that in some cars, including mine, that mystery comes from a loose caliper bolt. It looks tight, feels tight, but is NOT tight -- hence the banging. Test by rolling over a 1/2" bump at 10mph. If you hear clanking, that's probably it. Then, apply a feather of brake pressure - if the clank goes away, that's confirmation. Now try one front wheel at a time to determine which side is loose. Good luck! Last edited by Henry; 02-24-2003 at 08:17 PM. |

It must've taken you a long time to go 1,000 miles at 10MPH.

I'm glad that worked for you, however it's not my noise. A few weeks ago I did adjust the pre-load on the rack & pinion. It helped maybe a little, but not enough to recommend it to anyone as a cure. I'm still convinced my noise is from poorly designed bearing plates. Maybe someday I'll find the time to pull at least one out and see what can be done to cure my noise.
