My wife gave me the OK to buy a Ferrari!

I was tempted to jump at the opportunity but, for now, logic prevaled. Some day, when we have more disposable income, I am going to do it and fulfill a life long dream. It was nice to see that she was supportive of fulfilling this dream, however.

For the record, I was not looking at a newer one. I was looking at one from the early 90s. A mondial T, to be exact. A red convertible with tan leather interior. It is a beauty.

What's the retail on one of those?

I thought I had a major victory when the missus gave me the green light to buy the Silver!

Re: My wife gave me the OK to buy a Ferrari!

Love the 90s 355 F1 spiders! My favorite Ferrari for sure. So all you have to do is pay off all your bills and then MAYBE you can buy one. I think the wife was just testing you to see what was more important to you. Lol. Good luck and I hope to be in the same boat when my business gets running well.

I was wrong. It was an '89 with 30,000 miles on it. The bidding ended at $26,100 but didn't meet the reserve. I can't recall what price the bidding started at but I have seen these go in the 20s before, depending on condition.

And, httrdd, she was dead serious. We have joked about this many times in the past and this was different. There was even a mention of "not wanting to wait too long" before doing something I have wanted to do since I was a child. It was almost surreal.

You mean, will she let ME pay for it. I think the answer is yes. She even started discussing how we would work out the finances. It was a really nice feeling to have that gesture of support, even if for a moment.

Pssh I am having a hard time just trying to take out money from our account for a trans oil cooler. Very nice car though. Red is the only way to go.

Re: My wife gave me the OK to buy a Ferrari!

Did she also give you the okay for the repair bills? Every person I know that has a 10 year or older one says you can expect to pay about a 1/4 of the cost of the car in maint. and repairs every year based on 3000 miles a year. Its more $$$ if you drive it less or more.

All of them tend to do a lot of the basics themselves and source a lot of the common parts (bearings, switches, etc. from the supplier not Ferrari).

Re: My wife gave me the OK to buy a Ferrari!

Please allow me to make a suggestion. If you're in the 20k range, go with an Acura NSX. I have a friend who got one in high school (back in 2000) and has been driving it daily ever since with absolutely no issues.

Above that, go with a Gallardo. They're very reliable.

Ferraris are so fragile. It seems to me it would take the fun out of it, constantly worrying about it breaking down.

I like the NSX but it may actually be a bit more expensive for similar mileage and condition. But more importantly, you have to understand that I have loved Ferraris since I was 5, or maybe younger, and it has long been a dream of mine to own one. Also, the Mondial is a 2+2 which can be a fun feature when traveling with another couple, assuming their wife is as small as mine.

My wife's favorite cars are Lambos but Gallardos are A LOT more expensive and I can't see them being more reliable. Ferraris actually are quite reliable if you treat them right. A friend of mine in high school had an uncle who was in the "garbage collection business". He bought a new Ferrari with cash. He pushed the car too early and ignored the break in procedure. He blew the head gasket. If there was ever a case of using EXACTLY the fluids the manufacturer suggests and torquing EVERY bolt to EXACTLY what the manufacturer suggests, Ferrari is it. The tolerances are insanely tight.
