Since I've moved here I've found two things that tickle me:

1) People in Kentucky honestly believe that they live in 'The South'. When I lived in Florida everyone north of Atlanta was considered a 'Damn Yankee'. You might get an exception for living in SC, VA and TN, if related by blood and have a document proving on which side of the war your predecessors fought. (NC was out no matter what, due to 'North' being part of its name.)

2) I grew up in Ohio and as such I'm bilingual - I know what soda AND pop are. However, it took me a while to find out what 'Big Red' was - everyone around here seems to figure you should know that at birth. (cream soda to the rest of the world)

Ohio River = Mason Dixon Line

Kentucky -- South of Ohio River

Kentucky -- South of Mason Dixon line, ergo, Southern.

Also, check your history books. Bowling Green (my hometown and home of the Corvette) was the capital of the Confederacy . . . for about two weeks, til the Yanks burned it to the ground.

Aredubjay <----- Had ancestors who fought for both sides, one of whom fought for both sides after getting caught stealing his Confederate officer's horse, broke out of jail to avoid being hanged and fled to "the North" where he joined up with them and became a blacksmith.

Wow! ..and I thought the Afghanis invented fighting for the winning side when convenient. American ingenuity wins again.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really care and I do recognize the historical facts. It's just that I more or less think of the south in a geographical state of mind. IMHO it all 'feels' the same, from Lake Erie to Atlanta. To me, for what it's worth, the south 'feels' like kudzu and spanish moss, cajun, creole and seminole, gators and sawgrass, etc., etc.

I remember always thinking it was bizarre for our teachers in Ohio to be telling us that Ohio was a midwestern state. I suppose if one was to think of the Allegheny and Rocky mountains as the dividing lines... I always figured the Mississippi River and the Rockies as the defining features. My reasoning is that things are pretty much the same on both sides of the Alleghenys, whereas things start changing on the west side of the river.

Such was the life of folks in the border states. You were friendly to who happened to be in charge at the moment. Some homes kept BOTH flags at close hand.... Don

It's really all the same to me too. But, I have noticed an interesting thing. I live in Kentucky and work in Indiana. There is a definite "Hospitality Gap" within my short 40 mile drive. Perhaps it's because "southerners" will be kind to your face and talk behind your back, whereas "northerners" are more blunt and to the point.
