car making a clicking type noise

It sounds like a coolling fan thats only working some of the time. I only hear the noise some time. It sounds like its coming from under the car. I mostly hear it at idle.
I checked and both fans turn freely when off and both spin
when on.
Water pump and timeing belt replaced last year 18,000 miles ago

Is it the fuel injectors? Sometimes they will click. It is a rapid sound. Another clicking noise possibility is the flex plate. Sorry. That's at the back of the engine and connects the transmission.

Is there any way to check the flex plate without removing the trany?

There is a little rubber plug that comes out which allows you to inspect the flex plate.

Somtimes a slight exhaust leak will produce a clicking sound very similar to valve ticking.

I tried to look at the flex plate by removing the rubber plug, but I can't see center of the flex plate.

The rubber plug at the top rear right side of the engine is good for checking the cracks in the flex-plate outer edge. If the clicking sounds louder from the plug hole it could be the flex plate. I think it will almost be impossible to see the crank shaft bolts from underneath but the click may be louder. Have you seen this thread? There are good pictures of the problem and Joseph came up with a way to do the work without pulling the engine or tranmission.
