Can anybody tell me where it is?
Is there someplace on the internet that shows how to change it?
Thanks

It's attached to the lower radiator hose. Just follow the big black hose to the engine.

Re: thermostat housing

Hmm... here's a diagram. Should be a smallish problem from underneath the front.

For myself, I would stay with the OE from Subaru. I don't know of any that are better. Maybe someone else does.

If you compare the stock to most any aftermarket one it will seem like the wrong one, becouse it is. The Subaru T-stat is made very well and has things other ones don't. I'v had problems trying to use non-genuine Subaru t-stats, in other words, get one from Subaru, any dealer should have one on the shelf they are the same as the Legacys and Imprezzas.

Angry Car STILL over heating!!!

Thank you thank you......immensely helpful!!! BUT............ the silly thing is still overheating! I don't get it! It will run just fine ....... we went from SaltLake to Flaming Gorge.....got within 50 miles of Manila Ut and BAM! Up shot the temperature gauge AGAIN
Then it went down.....then it went up....then it went down.......then it went up!!! But the weird thing about it is that when we popped the hood, the car didn't FEEL hot.....the radiator cap was cool enough to hold your hand on it but the overflow was full..... Any ideas???? It did the same thing on the way home from Flaming Gorge. Got about 50 miles from home, car was running great, not even a fluctuation in the temperature gage.......then the air conditioning started to get warm and BAM up went the temperature gage again.....all the way to the RED!!! Same thing, the engine does not feel hot , the radiator cap is cool enough to touch but the overflow was full........do you think it is the radiator cap??? Any help would be highly appreciated We are confused We just got a thermostat at the auto parts store....Maybe we should pull it and get an OEM?? It was VERY different from the original.......Thanks!!

I've got a generic thermostat and it works fine, so I wouldn't worry about that if it was installed correctly. As for the symptoms, it sounds like it might be low coolant or a bad water pump or both. Also, make sure that both fans are working properly, ie set the AC to high and make sure that both fans spin.

Marissa,
It sounds like you've got an air pocket in the cooling system, pretty common when refilling a Subaru after it's been drained, check the coolant level in the radiator for the next few days, and keep it topped off, the air should work itself out after it's been run a couple days, just don't let it get to hot.

I don't recall any place to bleed the air out on a SVX motor, like there is on the XT6 motor.
