ABS--Absolute Bull Poop

I hate ABS. I have never had it before and will never see the point in having the car do something I feel I can do better, like this lousy crapomatic. Sorry about that, just venting. Anyway, My abs light always comes on about 1 to 3 minutes after I start the car without fail. My brakes work fine so I am not really worried, should I be? Or should I just take the bulb out. I love easy fixes.

Thanks

You can diagnose the problem by using the attached procedure.

I have thought removing the ABS system but others have pointed out this isn't easy. I think the SUBARU drive train layout is less likely to have uneven braking problems, equal axle lengths. The SVX rims are designed to push air evenly at all four wheels, left and right side rims.

I would like the ABS to be off when it snows and on in the rain.

ABSless

One of my SVXs is a 94 base model LE. It does not have ABS brakes and I really like the feel better than my ones that do have ABS. Of course, I do not race or place high demands on the brakes, so don't know if I am losing braking power. I suspect I am not and damn sure like the feel better and control.

Guess I could compare my cars and just see what the difference is and potential for removal. Suspect there might be some electronic problems.

ABS is only designed to counter the "Oh Crap" scenario. If your ABS kicks in, then you are braking loose one of your wheels and increasing your braking distance anyway.

Lots of people believe they can outbrake ABS and a few of them are right, but when you look up from changing radio stations and see the line of cars in front of you stopped, 99.99% of the people will mash the brake pedal.

I'd rather have the car behind me have ABS than to be their next hood ornament.

I love ABS in a panic stop. I do not want to drive without it. I just do not like it in the snow. I can tell when a wheel slides in snow but not on wet or dry pavement.

I bought the car with the abs light on. It'll stay on.

In my 96 bronco, you just pull a fuse and it disables the abs. I really hate it..

You can always wire up a kill switch to the ABS relay under the hood. Then the ABS system will react, but nothing will happen at the brakes. Then you can place an ABS kill switch on the dash. I'm sure it will trigger a warning light & code, but as long as you are expecting it, you should be able to live with it.

I had posted a similar note somewhere. My ABS has almost made me crash 2 times becouse I'm not used to it. Every other car I'v had I knew how to control the skid and steer the car. The #1 rule people don't realize is that locked up wheels won't steer the car. ABS is good for racing thoe, you can brake harder and deeper in to a corner and still steer through it. But it does suck in the snow, it's like not having brakes at all.

The ABS wasn't the culprit, it was your unfamiliarity with the car. I knew my SVX had ABS since the first day I owned it, and tried to familiarize myself with its behavior in all weather conditions as soon as an opportunity presented itself. Better to risk misjudgement of the car's stopping abilities in an empty parking lot than half way through the trunk of the car in front.
