Steering rack.....

I was informed by my mechanic that my steering rack is leaking and that my left front cv boot is torn. I was wondering how i would go about finding out which steering rack type I have. I looked on subaruparts.com and they listed two different types. Any comments would be appreciated.

svx_commuter told me that "The road speed sensitive rack has an electric module on it with a wire going to it. The engine speed sensitive rack does not. If you look below the steering shaft you can see the top of the rack."

Also, if your car is a LS-l or LSi model, it should have the electronic speed sensitive rack.

Hope this helps. I hope others post who know a heck of a lot more than me.

According to the parts people I talked to when my rack broke a few weeks ago, cars with AWD have the electronically controlled speed-sensitive steering rack. Or, if you want to make extra extra sure, call Auburn Subaru toll-free at 866-528-5282, ask to be connected to parts department, give the guy your VIN and ask which rack your car has in it. (These are the guys behind 1stsubaruparts.com and svxparts.com)

My car happens to need the electronically controlled rack. If you'd like an alternative to the expensive new part, you could go the way I did -- I ordered a remanufactured unit from Meridian Auto Parts (http://www.meridianautoparts.com) for $290.00 (plus $150 core) that included a 3 year warranty. They shipped it promptly and I haven't had any problems with it (so far! ). (The electronically controlled rack is the one listed w/ solenoid.)
