4.11? 4.44?
So Harvey, Which do you reckon? Would the 4.44 be too low, take away too much of the long-legged gait the car can do?
Joe

All that technical stuff
Well, it is all very interesting, but I am just going to have to stay on my point, the tranny is designed to be 4 speed, and I don't think it is really necessary to push it in 3d all the time.
And about gear ratios, that the final drive is pretty high, and Quote:
I know that Altima and SVX are different, but their trannys are the same.

High revs at high speed is good for the tranny, everything works at optimum pressure [it will failsafe to a higher gear if you go too high in the revs] What people are trying to avoid is travelling in a very high gear at low speed and undesirably low engine revs, mostly the 1000 to 1500 range. You should continue to drive all the time in D if that is what you want. It is only advice, you pays your money and makes your choice. Joe

Just to further joes explanation, the low engine speeds in a high gear gives the transmission a low line presssure, and excess heat some think. phil

Re: 4.11? 4.44?
Quote:
quote: This is. how the gear ratio numbers work out. As the ratio is lowered (larger number) the speed is reduced and the torque is increased at the wheels. STANDARD SVX 3.545 final ratio. GEAR....RATIO......OVERALL....SPEED @ 6800...TORQUE @ WHEELS TC...........1:1/2:1 1..............2.875..........10.19............... ..49...................2323ft/lbs 2..............1.545...........5.47............... ...92...................1247 3..............1.0...............3.545............ ..142.....................808 4..............0.694...........2.46............... .204.....................560 FD...........3.545 SVX 4eat with 4.44 final ratio 1.............2.875...........12.7................ .39.....................2895 2.............1.545...........6.85................ .73.....................1561 3.............1.0...............4.44.............. .113.....................1012 4.............0.694...........3.08...............1 63.......................702 FD............4.44 5speed with 4.44 final ratio 1.............3.545............13.8............... .32.......................3146 2.............2.11...............8.2.............. ...54.......................1869 3.............1.448.............5.6............... ..78.......................1276 4.............1.088.............4.2............... 104.........................957 5.............0.875.............3.5............... 156.........................798 FD...........4.44 The difference in ratio is 20%. That equates to a 20% reduction in speed and a 20% incress in torque at the wheels. It also reduces the load on the gear box by 20%. So the Legacy box will survive in the SVX as long as a low final drive ratio is used. Though it would be in the danger zone if more torque is extracted from the engine. In the same way the auto box with the same final drive reduction would have 20% less load applied to it. Allowing. a 20% increase in engine torque before it is back to the same applied load as standard. You also must realise that the torque. converter in the auto can change ratio from 1:1 to 2:1 thus doubling the torque available from the engine and varying all the gear ratios. The end result is that if you want to use a 5 speed don't work the engine. If you are going to work the engine use the auto box with the lower final drive ratio, it will handle more torque that the 5 speed . Joe the mph/1000rpm, would drop from 30mph/1000rpm, for the 3.545. to 25mph/1000rpm. for the 4.44. Harvey.

Thanks Harvey.
Big gap. I mean between 3 and 4 in the 4EAT, whatever the final drive. Looking at this, the 5 speed is the obvious choice. Using the auto, the 4.11 diff [although not listed] would seem to be a good compromise. Relaxed cruising in 4, and good torque/acceleration in the lower three. Joe

Thanks also Harvey,
I have not taken the time to previously look up the figures as I should have done. If these facts do not illustrate the reason for using direct drive at commuting speeds nothing will. However they do have to be interpretted. However in this age of the ten speed bike surely this should not be too difficult.

wow, nice
Harvey thanks for the #s and for explanation. I will look in to it, more carefully. It is interesting to know all that.
I will get you guys the ratios for Nissan later this week, or next week, if i get a chance. I am going out of town tomorrow, so my SVX gets to sit at home, while I'll be traveling in a college van, made by Shevy, he he. have a happy discussions. Nik
