Audio solutions?

Hi there!

What are most of you guys doing for audio these days?
There doesn't appear to be a Metra wiring kit for the SVX (boo, hiss!) and I'm not crazy about jury-rigging the wiring in my dash...
...Are there modern Subaru units that are plug-and-play replacements?

Options and suggestions appreciated!

Thanks!

as far as i know there aren't any plug and play units, but i do know that one of the guys on here sells wiring harnesses, then you can get whatever you want.

I have seen people put a single high unit and a pocket. I have a single unit that's MP3/CD and i have an ipod hookup for it, and on the other layer, i have a cup holder/coin tray from a ford. I just have to figure out how to get the cup holder to work better, but it looks good. I'll put pictures soon.

Hey audio wiring harness guy!

Can you email me your offerings and products to triadtuning@hotmail.com?

Looking to replace my old worn-out headunit and need a clean harness.

Thanks!

Pick up a 6-disc from the WRX/STi crowd for $125-150. I did and have been very satisfied. Get both plugs from the man and Plug and Play!

Yeah, I received a "PM box full" email from the board at the same time. I purposely let it fill up so people would have to use email to contact me . But that doesn't work so well if you don't find my "for sale" post...
For Sale: Radio Wiring Harnesses for SVX!!
(The board used to have a "send email to this user" link on the profiles and when you clicked on a person's username in a post. I hope that feature comes back sometime)

As RojoRocket said, many SVX owners have been buying factory head units from other Subarus to keep the "stock" look while still upgrading to a 6-disc changer (and even MP3, aux-in, and satellite on the latest decks).

I have the reverse harness that plugs into newer Subaru HUs. Combine that with the SVX harness for a plug-n-play solution.

I have a wrx 6 disc in my silver... fits great and looks totally stock. I am not sure how well it reads CD's simply because I don't own any But it plays great sound. I am sure others with the wrx changer can chime in here

Here are a couple of pictures from other SVX owners, showing a little more of the surrounding dash...

(click thumbnails to see full-size pics)

Gary, who was my 3rd customer:
SVXash's:
Both of the above are fairly old models. While they match the SVX factory radio's appearance, they're getting a little "long in the tooth." If you find one where the seller says he pulled it out a week after he bought his car and it's been sitting in a box in a closet all this time, it might not be so bad.

I'll try to find a few more recent Subaru factory radios and post pics. But in the mean time you can check out some of the other Subaru boards: NASIOC.com, LegacyGT.com, SubaruForester.com, SubaruOutback.com -- basically try Googling "Subaru XX forums" and replace "XX" with any model [or omit it]).

Cars101.com also shows some stock head units in their sections detailing each Subaru model's history.

Only ones from the last year or so will play MP3 discs. Ones from a little further back will read audio CD-Rs.

The way you create an audio CD can make a difference too. Some radios will barf on discs that were burned too fast, or are longer than 74 minutes.

God they look so generic and plain and "squary" Subaru needs to design some better CD players lol.

I mean the 6 CD in Dash changer is an awesome thing to have... but I am also thinking that its not really necessary anymore to have many CDs since MP3 CDs hold enough to keep your ears busy for a long while...
