raced a neat car

there's this intersection on the road i always take to town where you come to a stop and turn left up a hill and it's immediately two lanes.. it's always fun to take advantage of the SVX's meaty torque band up the hill and pass the two or three cars that started up it before me.

this morning on the way to work i was in an "imaginary hurry" (which is an easy thing to be in when you've got an SVX) and so on the single-lane straights stuff i was passing the few cars that were in front of me. finally, I came up behind a red car which looked like a Dodge Daytona.. I moved out to pass it and he accelerated! i dunno, that always really pisses me off because sure enough, once I realized that it was gonna take me a little while to get past him, a car appeared around the corner heading for me.. I got on the brakes and pulled back behind the daytona-esque car..

finally we got to that 2-lane hill and i immediately pulled out into the far lane. he obviously knew what i was thinking, so a race it was. i started at least a car length and a half behind him. as i was coming up next to him i saw that his car was a Mitsubishi Starion Turbo.. pretty neat car. I know that a 3000GT/Stealth are virtually identical.. is it the same with the Starion/Daytona?

Anyway, he had two passengers, and I had an easy 200 lbs worth of DJ gear occupying all of my back and front seats.. it took me awhile, but i finally passed him right around the top end of second gear. Pretty cool car though.. ever notice that racing someone who's pretty well-matched makes your car feel REALLY slow?

I actually just mentioned this car in another thread here a few days ago. It's a mitsu starion, but you more commonly see the more muscular "Conquest TSI" imported by Dodge. 5spd. Turbo. RWD.

NEAT!

the Conquest/Starion just screams "the '80's", though. i think you are required to have a mullet to drive one.

Conquest on the track

I remember a conquest TSI on the track (Blackhawk Farms, SCCA, Midwest)

It wasn't a natural racecar as some machines turn out to be, but the guy had fun. He would burn up a set of brakes each session. He actually pushed the pistons THROUGH the pad once. pretty cool.

Racing turbo cars

Hey,

I agree with not racing anyone you don't honestly belive you can beat. It really sucks to lose I will say though that just because a car is a turbo...dosen't mean it will beat an SVX...I raced a 1.8 T Jetta and Golf and spanked both with great ease!!!!! You should have seen the look on their faces. They we're both friends of mine and were absolutely sure that they would win. Ya gotta love it! Beating your friend that thinks he's fast and furious...PRICELESS!!!! Now stay away from other turbos though...3000gt, 300zx, Supra, RX-7....lets not make ourselves look too bad...hahaha

Thumbs up Mitsu Starion

I also like that car!
It came up in the 80's and the euorpean version had/has 170 HP.
The car is as rare as the Subaru XT over here.

Actually, the out come would have been different if either of those VWs were chipped. The 1.8T in them is basically the Audi TT engine... with a simple computer swap it churns out 220hp.

Kinda neat actually. If only we could get the twin turbo SVX computer over here.

hehe

my mom was really into the TT for awhile and i did a bit of research on it.. as far as i could tell, it's more than just a computer swap... they do some pretty serious intake and exhaust tuning.. there MIGHT even be an intercooler swap involved, but i'm not positive..

Yeah, if you want the exact same TT drivetrain...but the thing is, VW detuned both 1.8Ts so it wouldn't have a chance to compete with the audi. Chipping a VW tt with an AUDI cpu won't provide TT beating performance, but it ups the HP and torque a LOT!!! I know of a 1.8T Jetta that can STOMP a Corrado VR6..... and those are pretty quick.

the engine is the same....you can get 31hp(to the wheels) by chipping the jetta....its a must for any 1.8t owner

A Starion totalled itself into my Knight Rider Trans Am (since we're talkin' 80's here) years ago, a girl ran a red light. Did a pretty good number on my fender but I was able to drive the 40 miles home. She wasn't so lucky.

I always thought they were cool looking cars for their time though. (yeah, I had a mullet)
