Just a Question to those of you that
are not in favor of our up-coming action in IRAQ...
Just so that I'm straight on this... Saddam is threatening to deploy chemical/biological weapons (that he claimed he didn't have last week ... remember that inspection thing....?) against troops coming in to enforce a UN resolution (1441) that was pasted over 10 years after the cease-fire that was put in place after he agreed to dismantle his "weapons of mass-destruction" immediately at the close of hostilities in 1991. He is claiming to be able to hold of the only "Super power" in the world, and he had no weapons of mass destruction? ( I guess he's going to take on our tanks and airplanes with AK-47's and spit wads).. Just how long were the negotiations suppose to last? (That’s my question....) And now my comment.... no one wants war... (well, at least no intelligent person) If Saddam were intelligent he would have made other choices earlier in the game. I'm sad people will die. I would hope that someday we will quit killing each other.. Maybe just maybe with fewer people in the world like Saddam that will happen sooner. If we show petty dictators like him that they can't get away with being a despot... it will.

How long do you negotiate with a dictator whose government is based on which lies he tells which people? And how can anybody expect those negotiations to end in a peaceful solution? This is a guy who just plain makes stuff up every time he opens his mouth. It's one thing if such a leader presents no security threat to the rest of the world. It's another thing entirely when such a leader has international obligations, of serious consequence and which resulted from unprovoked aggression towards a neighbor, that he has dodged for over a decade. Supposing that Saddam Hussein's government actually has no workable WMDs (which I don't buy for a second - if they were, indeed, all destroyed, we'd see the necessary cooperation to prove it), then this 'order' to deploy chemical weapons could be a scare tactic. It's not unreasonable to guess that Saddam knows full well that we can intercept those transmissions. From his point of view, it's worth a shot - knock our military's morale down a notch and maybe damage support for the war here at home.

Mitch,
I am not afraid of the war in the middle east. My parents are no longer in Jordan/Gaza/Israel. I am afraid of a mad man's retaliation off the Iraqi soil (ie US/UK/international) structures and lands. But we now know they have weapons of mass destruction. Could be a bluff... but you can't play russian roulette with a mad man. Once an "untouchable" land was touch on Sep. 11. When you are dealing with mad men, you just don't know what they are thinking and what they are capable of doing. God save us all from hands of mad men.

Well, I think it's a word - just not for the context you placed it in. I used it as a verb, as in 'to be turned into paste or a paste-like substance, probably a red one at that.'

We've known for about 25 years that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. After all we gave them to Sadam Hussein. What bugs me is nobody in Wash. DC has the guts to get up and sayin public "Hey Saddam where's the VX we gave you back on xx/xx/78, lot number xxxxx. " Thats why I don't feel right about this war.

US arms supplied to Iraq since '78.
Hello Larry!!!
Nice to see you are not afraid to ask the hard questions. Yes, it is quite true that the US has exchanged arms for oil with Iraq for a long time. In fact, it is likely that the US in 1988 provided the deadly gas to Hussein to kill some of the Kurdish people who occupied strategic oil fields to ensure continued and bountiful trade relations. At the very least the US should be acknowledged for having likely known what was going to happen to the Kurds. To now argue human rights abuses as a basis for UNLAWFUL invasion is specious, un-supported and downright immoral. But I suspect you know this Larry, and as such you are the type of person who the rest of the "co-alition of the willing" should hope comes to position of influence in your country. Please, we must have change because the document drawn-up in September 2000 by the present administration entitled "Rebuilding Americas defences: strategies, forces and resources for the new century" is a blueprint for rigid world domination that will erode human rights, not protect and expand them. This document targeted Iraq well before S11 - in fact, some commentators suggest that it was this document plus the dodgy election result that got Bush into power that really led to the S11 attacks! Bush rubbishes the UN because he knows that the only way to make this war legal was to get a second UN resolution. Because other nations disagreed with granting legality to this war proposal Bush was forced to 'go-it-alone'. Bush, the US Military and arguably the US government are now liable to be charged with war crimes, so we might see Bush et al join Slobodan Milosevic and other ugly ex-leaders for criminal trial. Ask yourself as an American, do you want the rest of the world to see your government and leaders as war criminals, responsible for the death of thousands of innocent civilian, not to mention the en-masse destruction of cities and towns? Remember, Karma is instant so which side of the line are you on? As I write this, 'Shrub' is on the telly tellin' me he has pushed the button. Really, really sad. Bernard WAKE -UP AMERICA - WE NEED YOUR INTELLIGENCE AND MERCY MORE THAN YOUR AGGRESSION AND MIGHT. |

Bernard,
Thanks for your post. I found it very refreshing to get a western opinion that is not a USA opinion. I see many parallels between the ancient Roman Empire and the present day USA (my country). That scares me. Rome started as what was called a democracy ~2300 years ago. Then they evolved into the worlds first tyrannical super power. They lasted ~1000 years. If we (the USA) continue down this path, I doubt if we'll make 400 years. The senior George Bush coined a phrase when he was president. It was 'A New World Order'. That scares the hell out of me. There is an old saying that 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions'. I think the USA is trying to get friendly (USA contolled) governments in Iraq & Afghanistan. That means we, or our forces, will be on either side of Iran. This is of great strategic value in isolating, spying & containing Iran. What frightens me about this idea, is that we did the same thing 25 years ago with Iraq. That's how Sadam Hussein came to power. Next is North Korea. I think that they are too powerful right now for the USA to confront them directly. I believe we are working very hush hush thru China to ease this crisis. Kim Il something, the head of the NK government is a real nut case and makes Sadam Hussein look like a day at the beach. On a lighter note. I do not believe that there was any grand conspiracy to get GW elected as president, in spite of what happened in Florida. Years ago, I was active in the local Republican party and was involved with elections& polling . The sheer stupidity of local election officals and precint polling captains precludes any grand scheme to get someone into office. I'm sure that the stupidity in Florida during the presidential election was just as prevalent. Lwin, Please disregard my statement above about getting someone elected. Chicago seems to have overcome the stupidity that I spoke of thanks to the late mayor James Daily. He could get anyone elected.
