Unhappy Strange Pulley Problem

Ok this was kind of weird. I came out to my SVX today started it up and drove my was to work. When I got there, I noticed I completely forgot my laptop, and had to quickly run back home to get it. Yes it is one of those days.

Anyways, when I put the car into park, I noticed a very loud noise coming from the front end. Sounded like a belt slipping, just louder than other belts I have heard before. I tured off my AC to see if I could here it better...the noise went (pretty much) away. I chalked this up to a loose belt or something of that respect going to my AC compressor, and seeing I was already late for work...quickly headed home.

Well I got home, this time with no AC on and put the car in park...only to hear the same noise again. This worried me, something else must be up. I popped the hood only to discover something terribly had gone wrong with my main crank pulley.

The pulley, have what I if I remember is called a harmonic balancer built into it, had seperated. The center of the pulley containing the bolt was in its normal position, however the outer ring had slipped from its kind of gel like center. It was not about 1/2" - 1" towards my engine, and now rubbing into the cover for my timing belt.

Have anyone encountered anything like this before?? If so, do you think I could just push it back onto the center, or is it full replacement time?

Eddy you probably have seen this before...any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

On a second note,

If I do have to replace my pulley...does any one know if the N1 lightweight pulley off of JcSport's site works?

Its here:

Thanks,
Ryan

Yes this happens once in a while time to replace it.

I believe the pully fits all the EJ series engines and the EG33
dont hold me to that though

Thanks! I called them today, and yes they fit...however they don't have any in stock. Probably won't have one for a few weeks either...which is too bad since I need to drive my car on a 2400 miles (round trip) trip to Canada in a week.

Bummer,
Ryan

How much is the unortho pulley? Also where might I get it?

I looked on subaruparts, and I can probably get the stock parts at my local dealer (biggest in NA...at least they say). Its about $149 shipped.

If the unotho pulley is about the same price...heck yeah! However, does it include a harmonic balancer, as many aftermarket ones I have found have not.

Thanks,
Ryan

They are $225. Teague's Auto sells them (http://home.att.net/~teaguesauto/) or you might check www.motorsportwarehouse.com.

I checked out the dealer locator and found one called Paragon Tuning that was pretty close to my house.

They quoted me $209 and about $30 to overnight it to me (so I can work on it this weekend).

Hopefully they can get it in tomorrow....the $750 SVX will live on!

Thanks again guys,
Ryan

Where the heck can I get a belt???? The guy when I first called said the pulley was a stock size. Hence stock belts. However he called and now I am told that is not. The problem is that Unorthodox doesn't have belts. How in the world am I supposed to guess what size belt I need.

Also he upped price of the overnight....$76!

I'll probably just go stock.

Not what I want to do...but for half the price.

Poop!

Thumbs up

Woohoo!

I spoke to soon!

Got mine at a discount yet...direct from Unorthodox.

If anyone is interested....check this link out:

http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/specials.html

What it is is that they have updated the design of the pulley. The new design is 1/8lbs lighter than this model. However the new design is also $116 more than the older one they are trying to blow out.

They only have very few left, only red and blue.

I ordered mine next day air in red for $145. Much less than quoted locally even.

Thanks guys! Viva aftermarket!

Ryan

That is sooooo funny...

I just had the pully separation night before last!! Exact same symptoms:

"belt squeeling" sound
a/c does not blow well...

due in for my 120k tune-up, I get in the car one morning start it up, and BAM!!!! No power steering, no a/c, no nuthin'. Look under the hood, and nothing but shaved accessory belts and a (very heavy) ribbed metal ring laying on the top of the belly pan.

I just picked the car up from the dealer today.

Every problem I have encountered with this car stems from the parts designed to be "cushy". Screw cushy!!!! I want to HEAR my intake suck in huge amouts of air, I want my clutch pack to SLAM home at every gear change, I want to feel every nick in the road through stiff bushings and springs, I ENJOY setting off car alarms when I blip the throttle in a parking lot!!!

...sorry, got carried away there...
