HID Conversion

ok so i installed HID's on my buddies Honda(EWWWW) but i really liked the brightness of them when driving it at night. So i have been considering putting them on my svx. i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, maybe a recommended brand. Is there any electrical problems i should be aware of, like draining to much power?

and im not sure if i want to do both highs and lows, and suggestions?

Get a set of Lavalux HID's from svxfiles. I have the 6000K version (5000K is pure white, 6000 is slightly blue, like the Lexus lights) and I love them. Absolutely no problems, I think they use less power than the standard halogen bulbs.

You only need the low beams. Get a high quality set of regular high beam bulbs (not overwattage or any of that stupid sh#t) and you'll be set.

I have had the Lavalux 5000K HIDs installed longer than anyone here. The original set was introduced on svxfile's car last year at the Pumpkin Carve Autocross/mini-meet and he took them out of his car and installed them on mine.

Their performance and reliability are flawless! I was so impressed that I installed the fog light (H3) HIDs as well (very highly recommended)

I am using PIAA 4100K halogens ion the high beams; no need for HIDs there. When you need them, they come on instantly at full intensity with no need to warm up.

See my locker HERE
for photos of the lights in daytime, night time, beam pattern, and ballast installation.

THESE ARE GREAT!!!

To be strict, I think they're illegal in our cars...

Unless you're real lucky and it's your real lucky day, then you might get a ticket from a cop if also your lights are way not improperly aligned.

Chances are these aftermarket HID conversion kits blind oncoming vehicles a lot of more than factory oem xenon lights. I can personally tell lot of differences(how bad or how least they blind me thru the rear view mirror) from the factory oem xenon cars or those aftermarket HID conversion kit cars behind me............

In certain countries, installing aftermarket HID conversion kits to those cars that doesn't come with that is illegal now.

Discussions? Opinions?

I get flashed by other drivers more in my non HID cars (SVX) than with the HIDs.

I think that the fog lights look more yellow and look like fog lights instead of people thinking they are on high beam. Some think because there are 2 lights on each side, the lights are on high.

I have a set of 8k Danzo HID's purchased from Dayle (motorsports warehouse) and I love them.

I got brighted just as much before with my standard lights as I do now.

I wouldn't mind adding a 5 or 6k in the fog lights though. That would be muy sweet.

I have my doubts on this. I've seen my car alongside a Nissan Maxima with factory HID's and projector lenses, and the Nissan was quite a bit more painfull to look at. The ones who get tickets are the ricer croud that install an HID system into a halogen buld housing, not a projector lense. The projector focuses the light into a single point and beams it down the road. The reflector housings don't focus as well and throw a lot more random light, making a big blue/white glare. I'm sure everyone has seen this at some point.

It's illegal because our cars' headlight housings are not designed for HID lights. Also, I think the bottom line it's illegal is it's not DOT approved to have these lights on our cars. Those cars came with factory HID technologies because they're DOT approved. It's quite a difference from my observe if I see the factory latest Acura RL HID lights, most BMWs with HID lights,
Audis and high-end Mercedes-Benz SL with HID lights,...they're so bright and I think they blind people less and the light lay-out on road is beautiful and has a very clear cut-off points....maybe they do have good projectors/lens. They're of course some factory cars came with HID lights such as New Nissan Rogue, older Nissan Altima GLE and Toyota Prius Touring yet they don't have projectors but maybe their len designs allow to have HID and have better cut-off points on the road. They're also DOT approved.....my guess if you can get lower model of toyota prius or nissan rogue...if they already have the same housings and lens for their higher model so it'd probably be easier to get the same results if those owners upgraded to HID systems but they're still not DOT approved...

Our SVXi definitely have more advantages of having aftermarket HID lights because of its projectors. Maybe it's okay to have HID lights but it's not tested and approved from DOT. The Nissan Altima you're looking at is more painful to look at maybe because they're really brighter? The car is taller than our cars. Maybe they won't blind people that much after a certain distance(who ask you to stand close to look at the lights?) but they're dot approved...

Just my $0.02 and observations on the road. No offense to those people who has installed the HID conversion kits.

People who have seen my HID's often tell me that they are bright but not blinding, if you can tell the difference. It's not a distracting light, just more intense. From the driver's perspective, I much prefer it, it seems a much more natural light, and shapes colors and objects appear much more vividly at night.

Despite maybe not being the most legal of things (as is being discussed) I don't plan on taking them out anytime soon. People oftentimes assume that's what the car came with, since it is in essence a "higher class" car.

Dayle, nice to hear from you. I need to give you a call again soon and order some more parts!

It may be that they are "illegal", if held to the letter of the law, but I have zero worries of ever being harrassed over it. As long as your lights don't point up (like my friend's Grand Am) they attract no more attention than any other HID system, and far less than the poorly done blue-painted halogen bulbs. If a police officer doesn't notice them, or find them different, you won't be troubled over it. They're not going to go over your headlight assembly with a magnifying glass to see if they're really meant for HID's or not.
