I've gone through 5 windshields on my 1992, every time it was while drive on what's called the 407 here in Toronto. It's made of concrete and it seems the windshield on my SVX is a magnet for the stones that fly off the road like bullets. The cost of the glass only is $2100.00, thank god for insurance, I only paid $100.00 deductible each time. I have not driven on the 407 since the last breakage last year, my insurance company upped my deductible to $250.00.

I get glass chips on my old vehicle and now my Forester on a similar stretch of road here in Des Moines, where I-80 west curves and heads south right before I-35 branches off...its called Rider Corner. Even when there aren't any other vehicles around me. I have gotten about a half dozen chips there, unfortunately I have to drive that stretch quite a lot. Must be the wind direction/velocity there or something. I am trying not to drive my SVX there if I can help it.

You can't have any more windshields - you are over you quota!

Our local dealership showed $1200+ about 3 months ago... but they would discount it for us to only $1050. Local companies have no trouble getting the aftermarket glass (our quotes installed are around $300), but as pointed out there is no trim except on the factory glass. I am not sure how "worth it" it is to spend 4 times as much for a windshield.

As an interesting aside (and perhaps portend of the future for the SVX ), I just last week read in a magazine (Hemmings Exotic Cars, I think) where a fellow was writing in asking for info on a windshield for a 1997 300 ZX. He could not find one anywhere in the US. The magazine answered that he was correct. They too tried to find one, but there were none to be had - OEM or aftermarket. Interestingly also was the fact that apparently the 2 plus 2 TAKES A DIFFERENT WINDSHIELD! I am afraid we are close to not having any more OEM, but thankfully, there are still some aftermarket one available ...... That 10 years to manufacture parts is correct, but after 10 years ..... if it won't make a profit, then they won't ...

Windshield Trim

My windshield is not is the best shape. The original owner moved to Palm Desert and there is quite a number if tiny little pits in addition to a crescent shaped scrape matching the path of the windshield wiper on the passenger side. A young fellow advertised a windshield here and he turned out to be 80 miles north of me in Irvine CA. I arranged to have a mobile installer meet me and the seller at the seller's residence. As soon as he brought the windshield out the installer said he couldn't put it in my car because it didn't have the sealing gasket or welting. I called the installers boss and he confirmed that the new windshields come with the proper gasket/seal factory already installed on the windshield. By brother in Dallas, who owns a auto windshield shop confirmed it too. The poor guy trying to sell the windshield had completely removed the seal/welting when he took what was otherwise a very clean, clear windshield out of his wrecked SVX. The installers boss told me they could fabricate a gasket /seal, but it wouldn't look nearly as nice as OEM. I passed and still have the original pitted windshield.

for the bronze. (mine)

Can't imagine a company that sells $300 windshields for 1300 dollars not to make any more

I am on my 4th one in about 1 1/2 years
Original got a chip and went crazy before I even could drive home.
The day I got it replaced it got a chip and I took it back to the glass company but it spread so far it had to be replaced again.
The next one was chipped in a month at the bottom and cracked across about 2/3 of the windshield. I got the thing stopped on both ends and it lasted about 6 months before it started running again. Got it replaced a few weeks back and so far is ok. Definitely knocking on wood!! I guess that in todays world, that would be particle board!

They haven't brought it up, but Geico must love me!

WHen I recently had my windshield replaced, Allstate looked on the NAG website for auto glass and the price of the windshield was 3300.00!! They then got a discount which brought the price down to 2200.
The body shop required 2 weeks to get the glass...they told me it came from Japan also.

I also have a 0 deductible on comprehensive....so this didn't cost me a thing either...I recommend everyone choosing 0 ded.

I called SOA at work today and they only have 52 winshields in the usa at there warehouses. They have 29 bronze, NO BLUE at all, and 23 green. This sucks for us with blue windshields (ME).

This is a problem this community will have to cope with in the not to long from now (sooner, if these repeat offenders continue to break glass at the current rate)

I have an acquaintance who owns a Volkswagen Fox (no accounting for taste) and he said the enthusiast community suffered large losses in members when the windshields ran out. It is now impossible to replace the windshield on those cars, so once it is cracked beyond the limits of saftey, the car in junk.

Loss of parts will eventually take its toll on this community as well, we have experienced a resurgence of numbers now that the price of the SVX has fallen into the I don't need to finance it range. Prices will go up from here, and indeed, already have begun to as the number of cars that are not trashed dwindles. At some point the price will skyrocket as the parts supply disappears, and restoration is no longer possible without extraordinarily expensive fabrication. At that point, only the nicest examples of the car will be viable drivers.

Windshields will probably be the first real pinch. We lucked out that the SVX drivetrain utilized parts from such a long range of years, and will probably be available for many years to come.

Most exterior body panels can be reproduced easily, even the interior trim can be replicated without much expense. But glass isn't a do it yourself kind of thing.

I cant remember who it was that told me, but at our NW meet a couple weeks ago it was mentioned that there are no more OEM windshields left that have moulding. Can anyone verify that?
I just upped my insurance to cover glass ($100 ded) and I replaced it about 3 months ago. The installer had to use the original moulding because the glass was aftermarket. And now the moulding is fubared
Hey Kwren, where do you drive to get so many chips?

My winshield referenced in this thread had complete moulding and line up pins. Perfect fit.
