For those of us old enough to remember...
It is with deep personal regret that I relate the following news. I will quote the article from the Los Angeles Times:
Louis "Deke" Heyward, an award winning writer and producer for radio, television and the movies, died of complications from pneumonia March 26th in Los Angeles. He was 81. In a career that began in the early '50's, when he joined television's "The Garry Moore Show" as a staff writer, Heyward wrote for many New York TV programs. In 1956, while the head writer of "The Ernie Kovacs Show", he won a Sylvania Award for comedy writing. In 1963 he became vice president of production for American International Pictures, where in the next 10 years he produced 25 pictures, including "Murder in the Rue Morgue". He also wrote "Pajama Party", "Ghost in the Invisible Bikini", and "Bang, Bang, Your're Dead". He eventually became a senior vice president at Hanna-Barbera. Among his projects was the Emmy Award-winning "The Gathering", a 1977 television movie starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. But one of MY greatest memories involves a piece of pioneering history, that probably resulted in my needing glasses for the rest of my life.... ....you see, in 1953 Louis Heyward created a partially animated Saturday morning children's show, the first interactive one in history, with host Jack Barry... Sorry, Don, I was too engrossed in Kukla, Fran & Ollie to notice Winky Dink.
"Where have all the flowers gone?" Ron.

Different wavelengths....
Ron...Maybe they were on different networks. I know that in many places that we lived as I was growing up, there was only one station that you could pick up....usually due to the mountains. Some folks never saw shows that were on different networks that they couldn't receive. Some folks remember Howdy Doodie, but not Pinky Lee. Some remember Circus Boy, but not Super Circus....
...I know one thing. I'd love to find an original Winky Dink kit at some toy collectible show sometime! Don |

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear....
< Have fun, Don:
http://207.36.165.13/requested2.html> Randy....you da MAN!!! What fun! You know, I didn't know that the show was ever redone. Funny thing is that Heyward isn't mentioned at all in that 3-part article. I wonder whose idea it REALLY was? One happy guy.... Don |
