power antenna

so i investigated my broken power antenna today.. i wondered why even though i know the mast is broken, i never heard the motor... (previous owner disconnected it in the trunk...) okay... so that explains some... but as soon as i turned on my car with it RE-connected the motor wouldnt stop... is this normal? will it stop once i get a new mast? or should i buy a whole new unit??? any help is greatly appreciated

I know power antennas are cable driven with a motor driving it and should stop at the stopper on the cable. If there is no mast there is a chance it would keep going on.

I hope this helps

BTW in othe manufacturers you can get just the mast. However I strongly Advise against it as it will kill the seals and eventually the motor. Buy the wholething. Its not worth the hassle since its a pain to begin with.

Check with the others too. we have a unique dual antenna whatnot.

I tried to fix one of those on my old Acura. The mast has a plastic "cable" which basically resembles a zip tie with teeth on one side. This winds around a gear connected to the electric motor. Even though I managed to get it installed, I never got the antenna to extend and retract correctly. It would always stop short or not go far enough. I eventually gave up and bought the whole unit at WallMart (I believe...long time ago). So like it was suggested already, save yourself the grief and buy the whole thing.

A dissenting opinion: I replaced the antenna mast on my SVX over two years ago and it has worked perfectly ever since. And while it was a bit of a hassle because the nylon leader "cable" was broken, necessitating complete disassembly and rewinding... if I can do it, anyone can. There's how-to info here. If the motor works it makes no sense to replace the entire unit.
