Rear axle replacement

Hi,
According to the local Subaru dealer my son needs to replace the right rear axle assembly on his '92 AWD SVX. The dealer wants a lot for the parts, while used parts are fairly inexpensive. Does anyone have the procedure for removing and replacing the assembly? Also, will he need any special tools for the job?
Thanks

Look in How-To Documents under Body & Chassis / CV Joints.

Welcome to the site.

What are the symptoms? (just making sure they're not doing work for nothing)

The axle is making a thumping sound. When the car is jacked up and the wheel is spun you can actually see the axle moving in an oval patternn not just rotating like it should. He thought it was just a clip that was broken but they say otherwise.

I'm just hoping it's not a bearing or something with the rear diff.
