Well it seems to be that time of year for a few people, my simpathies go out to all who are having gearbox trouble at this time

Ok i have no 3rd or forth, it slips all the way to red line in drive and third, seemed to happen over night, literally, two days ago i noticed a small slip in drive of no more than 500 rpm, last night i lost both drive and third (i had two other people with me in the car), can anyone tell me what has happened..?

cheers,
Jake

My condolences for your tranny on this christmas. . Better start looking for an used 4.44 or 4.11. Hope you will go with a manual.

good luck.

Bummer Christmas present, Jake,

Yes it is the high clutch that is slipping, it is used in 3rd, and with the band in 4th, so it has to be it. There is a possibilty that the screen in pan is blocked, but it usually affects the inital take off. Does the ATF smell like money?

A rebuild is needed, may not be costly. Check out the auto shops around town.

Harvey.

Thanks everyone

especially harvey! In regards to the band, i have heard it can be replaced with aftermarket ones with better gripping materials, this was for toyota boxes, can the same be done here or is there more to it?

the atf is discoloured a little, smells like crap as always, but not burnt

Also i was wondering if someone could explain what high clutch failure actually means

We are a lot better off here Jake, we have a lot of very good auto rebuilders, that have done a lot of Subaru boxs. There may well be better facings advailable, as they are used in the Nissan box as well.

With the lockers out, I can't post picts, but the sequence is.The forward clutch is on for first, the band is applied for 2nd, the band is released and the high clutch is applied for 3rd, to get 4th the band is applied again. As you have lost the high clutch, 3/4, it goes back to 2nd, when the high clutch slips.

I have only heard of two other Euro models that have lost the high clutch. Phils in UK and one in France. I be interested to know what was the cause, was it due to flakey linings or low line pressure.

Harvey.

please dont everyone move along, i would still like help.

Thanks harvey, apreciate the help , i will talk to some local shops when they re open after chrissie, and see if they can find a cause.

Is it normal for this to suddenly happen, i would have expected to gradually get worse and worse? is there any chance its something electrical?

Well it won't be electrical, as the combination of shift solenoids to give 3rd and 4th are different. It does start gradually, it is just that the faceings on the clutch plates is very thin, about 0.2mm thick. When it starts to slip, it only takes a couple of slips to peak rpms to destroy them.

You could try unpluging the resistor behind the battery to see if the line pressure comes up enought to stop the slipping, just for interest sake, but don't let slip too much.

Harvey.

My bf had the same problem first and now the gearbox is completely dead. He wants a 5 speed MT put in. But as we are in Belgium that is proving to be a tad difficult. First of all 'cause basically nobody knows what an SVX is around here. And then of course there's the issue of finding the right parts for the conversion and a mechanic who's brave enough to do it.

He wanted a unique car now didn't he. :s (Well, at least in Belgium it's pretty unique. Only 5 driving here)

Grtz,

Kay
