Is The Svx Collectible?
In the Jan issue of a relatively new publication, Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car, you will find a picture on p.29 of an SVX. The article title is "25 Japanese Collectibles You Should Buy Now". The paragraph discussing the SVX is quite complimentary and describes the SVX as "a highly interesting car" which is interesting to us SVX owners. It does not mention the 4eat (I'm still a little bitter after handing my tranny tech $3000 for my rebuilt transmission yesterday...driving my SVX home made me feel a lot better but there's still a large hole in my bank account).
Author shows an SVX price range of $2500-$9500... Have a happy and safe holiday, WGJ

Hemmings isn't a new publication, quite true, but Sports and Exotic Car is a new specialty publication by Hemmings. I'm holding issue #4 in my hand, dated December 2005. pretty good too, and for eighteen bucks a year, I'll probably bite. (also try Keith Martin's Sports Car Market.)

We still haven't addressed the initial question: Is the SVX Collectible? It is difficult for us to be objective on this topic, but I'll give it a shot. Anything is collectible if you like collecting things. People collect old bottle tops, shoe laces, and rubber bands. You name it and somebody collects it. It is the same with cars; somebody out there collects Yugos. Don't ask me why, but they do. So, YES, the SVX is collectible. The real question is whether or not the SVX is an appreciating collectible. Is it increasing in value as a collector item? NO, I'm afraid it is not, not yet anyway. The Hemmings article says that the SVX may become more valuable in the future, so, if you want to put a few bucks at risk, then now might be a good time to buy one, or a few if you have a place to store them. I believe the SVX will appreciate in price as years go by. Nearly every car does, but whether or not it will become a hot collector item is anyone's guess. Given the number of interesting cars made during the same time period, I'd say the SVX has as good a chance as any to become a collector car. If you could buy a pristine stock SVX today, and if you could store it without paying storage fees, I believe you could make a few bucks off it ten years from now. Could you, however, make as much as you might by simply investing your money in the stock market? My gut feeling is that you are better off buying and driving your SVX, keeping it in good shape and enjoying it. That is your reward. Enjoy it now and let the future take care of itself.

Ok, don't ask me. I don't know if the value will ever go higher than is is now, but I have purchased these cars at a price that I really can't go wrong in the long run. I enjoy them and don't really care if the value goes up or not. They are part of my life and add true enjoyment to it.
Value is not always how many dollars $$$ one can get for a car.

Most have current licenses and have insurance for the road or storage. I can take one off of the road and put it into storage and take one out of storage and onto the road. It does not change my payment any because they are all insured the same way.
I try to rotate through them so they are driven from time to time.

I agree with Earl. Does it really matter if it's recognized as collectible? The only real benefit is that maybe the car will be a little more recognizable and respected. But, it already is somewhat attention-getting in its rarity and because of those weird windows. Face it, owning an SVX is never going to be like finding a Rembrandt in your attic. We'll never be able to retire off the proceeds. If it increases in value, you might be able to sell it and buy a 2002WRX. For those of us who appreciate them (I'm on number 2, small potatoes compared with Earl), it really doesn't matter, and the challenge of making them better makes for a fulfilling hobby.
