ATF Simple Question

I will soon be replacing my radiator and am going to take the opporunity to install a Perma Cool ATF filter kit and a ATF cooler. Lots of great post on the site regarding how to do these. (Hopefully even someone as inexperienced as me can successfully do it)

But I am wondering if I should change the ATF fluid prior to the new Filter being put in. My car is at 118k and will be going in for the 120k service soon, I believe they change the ATF as part of the service, but that service will not be done until after I do the filter/cooler.

And, how would I go about changing the ATF fluid?

Pull the drain plug and let it fall out into the pan. Measure how much you got out and put the same amount back in (provided you were right the first time). You will only get about 1/2 out each drain so do it now and then at 120k. You should probably be changing it every 15k at the most. I'd recommend Mobil 1 full synthetic as it is fully compatable with anything in there already. Once it smells like burnt toast its too late, the damage has been done. I change mine every oil change (but for me that is once a year at 1500 or so miles).
