Exclamation Help, my wife wants me to sell my svx!

Help, the wife is pressuring me to sell our svx. Its a 94 that we bought new when we were single. Its the only new car we have ever bought. Its been a fantastic car ever since.

Our problem is, we now have 3 kids. We have a Toyota mini van but the svx won't fit the kids in an emergency.

That's the justification for the pressure. Now on my side, my engineering friend who was helping me fix my ignition and troubleshoot my power window problem said: "This is a well built car, well engineered. If you sell it, you will not be able to afford anything close to this kind of car."

I think that is a valid statement. Just looking at the design of the power windows, how neatly tucked in everything is, how well engineered the rear suspension is, the cool engine .... I could go on.

Any words of advice how to combat this irrational urge? (if my wife ever finds this post, I will deny being its writer, probably some other guy in Maryland with 3 girls and a white previa and a 94 SVX) : )

warm regards

Ken

How big are your kids by now?.......you can fit two of them comfortably in the back......There's always the trunk to put one Plus the seats fold down.

the kids

We have 3 girls, Dana 6.75, Zara 5.4, and Mica 1.8. The 2 older ones will fit comfortably in the rear seats. The wife will not go with the trunk action!

The police recently busted a lady here in the DC metro area for having 2 kids in her trunk! She wanted room for the dog to sit up front!

The other arguement I have for retention of the SVX, I do automotive photography on the side and the SVX is a unique car that can hang with the exotics and the hot rods!

I'm practically an expert now at coming up with reasons to keep an SVX
Soo... let's get the brain into higher gear <klunk....haven't gotten around to fixing that transmission yet >

OK.. see if this flies... in a real emergency, the car will fit the three kids with you driving... it just won't fit the wife as well
...in a real emergency, you're calling an ambulance, which means one less person to come along, so everyone fits!
...in a real emergency, it doesn't matter how big/small the car is, you just cram everyone in and go. Any cop that stops you is a good thing, since he can provide high speed escort service to wherever you're going
...in a real emergency, at least 20 TV news vans will appear within seconds to broadcast live, and those vans are big enough to transport the whole family and the neighbours, too!

Will keep thinking....

Well, the obvious answer would be to get a different wife. But if that isn't for you, here's my thoughts:

The SVX safely fits four people, there are five in the family. What could be possibly be such an emergency that all five need to fit in one car at the same time? The fifth person could take a cab, or a neighbor could drive them.

The only emergency I can think of is a medical emergency, in which case, not everyone needs to go immediately.

Also, why would the minivan be gone with all five people at home??? If it is in the shop, insist on a loaner. If someone has it out shopping, there are only four people to fit in the SVX.

Something seams fishy. Maybe she just doesn't want you to be out in a hot sports car that attracts women

1) Keep the SVX and the girls, lose the wife.
2) Send Dana to military school.
3) Explain to the wife that you have three other cars.
4) Don't have any emergencies.

Take out the back seat and install a middle seat belt, using the bolts of the existing inner seatbelts.
They sell them at Advance Auto parts, and install the three smallest car seats you can find.
It might not be legal, but they are safer in the SVX than any minivan!

In all seriousness, this is what i would do. I am not married but every girlfriend i have had has been jealous of my svx and doesn't come close to understanding my obsession with the car!

That being said, women think logically/economically. I think its safe to say you love your svx, however you need to play the objective sensible card.

1. You know a lot about the car meaning you save lots of money by fixing it yourself.
2. You save on tons of insurance and car payments as compared to a new car.
3. The svx although limited in cargo space is a VERY safe car
4. Svx is reliable when properly maintained

These reasons usually get me out of hot water, hope they do the same for you!! Good luck!

you could become an unsolved mysteries case and just disappear in your svx never to be seen or heard from again except on the highways of america.

Ban the wife from riding in the SVX. That'll leave the seats open for the kids. Case closed.

I'm confused. When are all five of you ever going to HAVE to get into the SVX and drive to the hospital? Isn't that what the mini-van is for? And, as mentioned, in an emergency anything goes. If you REALLY HAD TO, you could fit all five members of your family in the SVX. It wouldn't be comfortable, but we're talking about an emergency trip to the local ER, not a cross country pleasure trip.

Keep the car. The mini van is more than capable.

I can't believe no one suggested selling a kid! In todays market they have to be worth at least 5x what you could get for your SVX!
