3.7 geared subaru tranny
This saturday i "accidentally" got the acquantace of a certified Subaru Specialist. Obviously we spoke about the SVX as he saw mine (as usual) and especially about the 6 speed tranny (I was about to show him the one i still keep in my garage). well he told me that this tranny has few problems with its 5th gear (it usually cannot handle stress and breaks oftenly). So he recommended me a 3.7 geared tranny (i guess it was the one of an earlier Legacy model only available to the Japanese market). He said that there are 3 models for that tranny, one with AWD option, the second with Lock-Unlock differential and the third had an additional stick (2 sticks) one for shifting and the other for the low gear lock. he recommended me the first type (AWD) because it is the closest 5 mt to my car's condition with a 3.7 gearing while impreza's and the other legacy's are either 4.11 and 4.44. this tranny is available over here for $200 for the tranny alone, i have to bring the differential also the shift knob , pedals and the CABLE ! (yes it is cable). Also i found the advantage of shifting to top speed in less gears (isn't better than 6 mt?)
TOTAL COST + LABOR + PARTS= $400. Comments!!!

I think he gave you the right advice:
If your car is the non-US type then it will already have a 3.7 rear diff, so it makes sense to get a 3.7 five speed. Regarding the transmission types, AWD is the way to go. The lock-unlock type found on older Legacies can only be run in 2WD mode unless you are on a slippery surface, otherwise the transmission breaks. The two-stick 10-speed type, which I have on my Legacy, would be great for towing a horse trailer across fields. But you probably wouldn't want to do that with an SVX. It's just 5 extra gears that you don't need. If you can get the whole job done for $400 then that's great. Over here in England that would buy about 3 hours labour.

you know what will be the hardest parts to get for that conversion? Nobody will believe me.... The d*mn pedals and shift knob. they never import those (used) to my country. I will have either to get them from the dealership or ebay.... i will see.
Do you think this tranny will hold our EG33 torque?

I never heard of a 6spd blowing 5th gear I have heard of them grinding because of bad syncros, but never breaking. Rember the 6spd manule has been put behind engines with over 300ft of torq stock, and I have never heard of one breaking on a stock engine. The only one i have heard of breaking was on a U.S. STi with drag tires, probley the heaviest duty clutch you can buy and i think 600hp. And that trannie blew 4th gear, while he was draging.
The 5spd manule out of the legacy (liberty) is pretty much the same in streneght as any other 5spd. I ve had a 92 5spd on my car for about 10,000 miles and iam surprised that its lasted this long, ive done around 20-40 very hard 4500-5000 RPM drops draging, which alot of time resulted in a 4wheel burn out, which was pretty damn cool, but in honesty i was tring to break it to see how strong it really was, and since it was $50 i dident really care about it. Right now the tranmission while driveable is in horrible shape, you ahve to shift perfectley or else it grinds horribley. Last edited by svxsubaru1; 08-01-2005 at 10:18 AM. |

I dunno about the 6 speed thing, but this is what that guy told me about it, the 5 th gear is the most fragile in this tranny...

while 5th might be the most frigile in the 6spd, its still stronger than and gear in any subaru built 5spd.

What he said about not being offered in the US, makes me wonder if it's an old Blitzen B4 tranny.

when I was looking for the 4.1 rear differential in the junkyard. I saw the 3.7 in an older subaru I think it was a late 80" legacy. and i thought it was some sore of mistake. because of everyone talk about he 3.4, 3.9, 4.1 and 4.4. but wich will give you the lower rpm's and higher speed???

3.7 = low torque and high speed ..... 4.4 = very high torque and very low speed. As B3lha mentioned our SVX's have a 3.7 auto cofiguration, se getting a 5mt 3.7 will be the same, but MANUAL

There's a japanese site showing the ratios of Legacy and Impreza transmissions. It doesn't mention 3.7 final drive anywhere though.

The Subaru Global website shows a 3.7 5MT in the current model Legacy 2.5 sedan. Maybe this is the one you need.
