A slightly different Tranny Thread
Ok, I'm going to have to replace the tranny in the next 12 months or so. My question is, (No I'm not gonna switch to stick, or 4.11 or 4.44, although they are tempting.)
What I'd like to know IS: would it be worth sourcing a Euro spec Tranny with the rear wheel bias to put in? I'm going to have Level10 work it over before it goes in regardless, but I'm wondering which auto would be best? USDM? EuroSpec? VTD(?) ? What differences could I expect? Do other members feel it's worth it? Thanks, Jonathan

The beauty of a switch to 3.90, 4.11 or 4.44 gears from a USDM Subaru, is the relative ease of the swap. It takes ~10-12 hrs and is a direct plug-n-play with your factory wiring. The choice is yours. If money wasn't an option, I'd get a similar 4.44 VTD set-up like Huck just did + the valve body upgrade from Level 10. -Chike

I'm doing some engine work, and don't race, so don't feel I need play with the final drive ratio. (Likes to cruise at 80 MPH 3K RPM) What improvements / differences can I expect with the VTD?

Hi Jonathan,
Probable not cost effective to do. The trans can come from any Euro model SVX, the rear diff is needed, if you want to use the 3.7 that is in the front diff, otherwise change the front diff to your 3.54. You will need the TCU from the same car, it will just plug in. The Japanese TCU has a speed limiter set to 115 MPH (it can be got around). The AWD section is stronger that the US version, and don't seem to have as much trouble. The difference is noticed in cornering, the back wheels push the car forwards and the front wheels, only have to change direction. Harvey.

I don't believe the JDM tanny I used was a VTD, it was out of a 94 Turbo Legacy(which was probably before the VTD came out), had a EJ20T with a water to air intercooler (Closed deck block)
It was a direct bolt in (other than using the SVX torque convertor, and swapping the ring and pinion in the rear diff. But I guess it would have had the more biased rear split...

If I was in the market for another SVX that'd be the one to get. Those 4.44 gears from a JDM turbo Legacy must be killer!!!! -Chike

I've got a deposit on it right now, so I'm pretty sure it's sold.... And yes, those 4.44's make it a blast to drive, even if it is an automatic
