well i called another independent subaru specialist and asked them about the brake band adjustment and was told it was above their ability level, but gave me the number of yet another independent subaru specialist that could do the adjustment. this same shop told me that the brake band adjustment doesn't do anything for 92 and 93 SVXs and i'm looking at repairing / replacing my tranny. for future reference, i asked what kinds of repairs they did do. apparently they do mostly preventative maintenace types of repairs, etc., but not major overhauls. then he started talking about the SVX having a timing chain rather than belt.

Actually Band Brake Adjustment is easy, only the first time it takes a little bit more time. From the second time it will be easy, by now i have done it 4 times and it took me 10-15min.

Usually it wont be set on one time, it would take a couple of times to make it perfect adjustment.

So you're saying trained Subaru techs know more than we do?

not at all, david. i think zeppelin is gonna take a look at with me next week before i do something drastic. i may get ambitious and actually pull some tcu codes myself since you have so generously supplied me with instructions on how to do so.

Yes, this is sadly true,
And the sun will burn out leaving us, smodering in the solar flares, radiation burning through our charcoaled bodies, THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO!!!!

Oh, wait, there is something we can do about transmission s slipping.....

my car just started flaring in rpms from 2nd to 3rd, but won't shift to 3rd or 4th(only in drive mode ). it feels like a half way shift at high rpm's going from 2nd to 3rd. i have never tryed manual mode either. if i do a brake band adjustment(noticed the great location pics)should i test run teh car in manual mode, in drive,3rd, or 2nd?

Test drive the car in "D" (manual mode off). Drive as you normally would. When 4th (and 3rd) gear starts slipping it's usually the high clutch that has failed.

Hello from across the pond!

I've got a 92 UK supplied SVX with a recently developed slipping 2nd to 3rd, a Pal of mine told me about the adjuster on the box and after a search found this thread. Ok, it seems quite straight forward to adjust the brake band and hopefully will cure the problem as the thought of a new or repaired auto box...........

To the point, is this a normal service procedure or just a quick fix until the inevitable.

John
