You are right, it is hard to get a couple of small wrenches in there!

If you really wanted to be accurate, you could use a twelve inch long wrench, and hook a fishing scale to it, then just apply 6.5 pounds of pull.
Or use a six inch long wrench, and apply 13 pounds to it.
Or a 5.5 inch long wrench and apply 14.181817 puonds to it

(I love math.)
But almost any adjustment you do will be better than it is now, assuming its flaring, or slipping.
Unless, like SVXRide said, if you over tighten it you will loose reverse.

Mine has flared a few times... So basically, I just need to tighten it a little bit (quarter or half a turn), and see if that helps? If not, tighten it more?

Setting 6.5ftlbs

Yes well Beav suggested cutting a hole in the floor, that would do the job, gee you could even get a tension wrench in there. He was only j/k.
When you tighten the adjuster, you are tighting the band to the drum and pushing the servo piston back into the cylinder, to take all the slack out. Then backing off 3 turns sets the clearance.

Settting it to 6.5 ftlbs applies enought tenson to achive this, without stretching it. It is not that critical to get the right torque. I would use a 3'' spanner and use one finger, if you are strong in the hand, or two fingers if you are a bit limp wristed.

If you still have flaring, tighten it a half turn. If it still binds, loosen it half a turn. But start from the right 3 turns first, don't just get in there and go a bit this way or that way, you are risking trouble. The box manufactures know the best.

When you are doing it, don't let the adjuster unscrew as you loosen the lock nut. If the adjuster unscrews too much it can drop the link off the end of the band, and the box has to come down to replace it.

Harvey.

Well, after doing a little research, I am going to attempt to adjust my brake band soon.

However, I think that it should be well noted that not everyone needs to tighten the band and then back off 3 turns. In the following document, it gives different solutions based on your particular problem. My transmission tends to flare a bit when upshifting from 1 to 2 at high RPMs, usually very close to redline. The document does not state to tighten it as mentioned previously, but to tighten or loosen it 3/4 of a turn from its existing state.

At least, that is how I am reading it. It appears to be the only way to interpret it, actually. But hey, look for yourself.

What I would do is adjust it 180° at a time and if you go too far then back up 90°.

Hi guys,

I have some of the symptoms thata you are discussing, can you guys' take some time to go through my' thread Need some quick advice and guide me in right direction. I can do any work on my car whtever you want me to do. I badly need my SVX back in perfect condition and its not having too omileage also, only 75k. I think brake band adjustment will do some good for my car as silverspear adviced me long time back, but we are not sure how to perform it.

Please guys help me out. I cant afford so much for a dealer to do something on my car.

thanks,
_pavan.

I read the "need help" thread you posted, and while it doesn't sound to me like it would be dangerous to drive your car to Reading, Im not going to tell you to do it, nor will I say for sure that it couldn't potentialy cause damage.

If you are interested in going I suggest you check out the Reading section for all the info on hotel and whats going on. The cut-off for the discount on hotel rooms has come and gone, but if you call they may still be willing to work with you.
