I've actually been leaving those plugs removed. I was removing moisture from my taillights and I noticed that when I opened my trunk all the water that runs off ends up flowing back over the taillights.

Now if the gaskets are not sealing properly the water will come into the trunk area instead of just being routed to the ground. If you're not sure what I'm talking about remove a taillight (6 nuts) and run some water on the outside of the trunk weatherstripping.

What I tried this time for taillight moisture is preheating an oven to 170°F then putting in the lights, cooking them for about 5 minutes then turning off the oven but leaving the lights in there to simmer. After about 3 cycles of this all the moisture was gone.

As for the gaskets I put silicone on the side in contact with the taillight and grease on the side in contact with the car. This was done last saturday and so far so good.
