I'll keep updating this thread as I learn more from the insurance people. I don't have any clue on what transport cost to PA would be.

Don't know what the rules are up there but here in Texas you can do a salvage retainer. I did it a while back with a car my son wrecked. Basically, the insurance company gives you the book value on the car minus the money they would get selling it to a junkyard ($50).

When insurance companies total a car the only thing they are taking into account is the car's book value and the estimated cost of repairs. If the second amount exceeds the first it's totalled.

I ended up scrounging new and used parts, fixed up my wreck and it was part of the deal that now has me driving an SVX. Taking into account the money I had left from the claim I only paid about $400 for my SVX....hehehe

Nope, not the same truck or driver.

University of Indiana? Haven't heard of that one

I did spend quite a few years earning my degrees from one Indiana University, in Bloomington though. (Sorry for the alumni humor; IU != UofI)

Yes, it is FWD. Just turned 137k miles. New tires 3 months ago, new wheel bearing around the same time. I have all receipts since I bought it in April '99 (had 73k miles from PO). All major servicing since I've owned it was performed at either Tom Wood Subaru in Indy, or Royal Subaru in Bloomington, IN.

New transmission in October '03, and I've put about 12k miles on it since.

I had no record of the PO ever changing the timing belt, so I had it done at about 115k miles. Front seal changed at that time too.

The engine does not drip or burn oil, and I switched to synthetic 4 years ago. I still get 23-25 mpg with my mix of 80% highway, 20% city driving in my current commute. When I get it out on the highway for a long distance cruise, it will return 27-28 mpg. Of course, I always use premium fuel (+91 AKI; Shell, BP/ AMOCO, or Marathon). If I had not just completed a total engine rebuild on my 914, and if the car is totalled, I would have considered swapping the EJ33 into the Porsche....

I still have the factory radio (AM/FM/Cassette), but I had an Alpine receiver and single CD installed soon after I bought the car. Power antenna works perfectly. All window switches work. No sunroof or window seal leaks (prior to accident - not sure now, but it might rain here today so I'll check it when I get home).
The escaine seat covers on the front are showing wear normal for age and use, but the rear seats are immaculate. All wipers work. Power mirrors work fine. No rust. I've been able to keep the car in a garage for the past two years, but prior it lived outside (hooray for crappy grad-school apartments that don't even offer car ports).

I'll keep updating this thread with information on my insurance status, and to answer any questions.

rear ended

I don't like lawyers any more than the rest, but if the adjuster jerks you around, get one. A good shyster can get you alot more say if you have back problems etc. Very sorry for the loss, every day I drive mine I worry about it, and it's not even winter yet.

Unhappy Update

The body shop estimates have been submitted to insurance and now I am waiting for their verdict. I hope they make up their minds soon b/c for now I get to drive a Buick LeSabre, which I determine to be the antithesis of the SVX...

Unhappy The verdict is in...

Insurance is going to total the car

Repair estimates are in the neighborhood of $4600, but I don't think they've checked to see if the frame is bent. That could make it more expensive....

I've yet to speak to the person who will tell me how much I get in return. I did ask about keeping the "wreck", and they can arrange for me to do so. Someone from my ins is going to contact me tomorrow with "valuation" data.

My insurance (USAA) has been outstanding for me through all of this. It is the other person's insurance that is acting stupid. I was rear-ended. The other person hit me nearly square, and even admitted to the police officer on scene that he did so. How can the other insurance company deny liability in this case??? Now, I have to go out shopping for a new car. I don't get a rental from them even though it is their customer who forced me into this predicament. I guess I was foolish and didn't opt for rental coverage in my policy? I was told by my ins I could get a rental, save the receipts, and then when it goes to arbitration, I'll get all my expenses reimbursed, but that could also take up to one year from now!!! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!??! And I will still be without my SVX!

If I buy the wreck back and get it fixed, insurance won't cover it for anything more than liability. And who knows, if it was bent, will it ever feel the same??

Sorry for the rant, but I'm super pissed right now. It looks like I'll have a parts car available soon. Somebody spoke up for the tranny already....but I'm not very adept with the wrench to remove an automatic transmission.....

Advice?
