Smoke

The problem at hand seems to be happening only when its hot out but i believe it is a serious issue. Blackish smoke comes out of the cars right side valve cover area (if hood was open and you are looking into engine bay) I believe the smoke to be the belt that turns the camshaft, and this particular belt is enclosed in a housing. I don't believe it is the serpentine belt but it(serpentine belt) does have a few small, very small cracks in it and should be replaced i think. The car does not overheat and all fluid levels are normal and do not fluctuate, absolutly NO oil as been burned, originally i thought oil was the problem. So i am wondering what belt is burning up if at all and how hard it is to replace it, because i don't trust mechanics with it, any input is welcomed, thanks.

if it's the belt driving the camshafts, then I would guess that means the idler pulley under the cover has bearings getting ready to die.

the job (replacing the timing belt & idler pulleys) is a lot scarier to contemplate than to actually do...of course that is predicated on some mechanical skills.

If a belt were dragging on an failing idler enough to create smoke, I'd think it would be complaining loudly, the smell of burning rubber would be powerful, and it probably would be all done by now. Be sure it's not an ATF cooler line leaking onto the exhaust.
