I wish you luck on your project. Sounds like a LOT of fun. Not to be rude and intrude, but I have a suggestion.
First.... and the one I'll stress the most... are you going to paint the car? If you aren't too happy with the current paint, .... PLEASE .... consider FLAT BLACK SPRAYPAINT. The whole car. Yeah, mask it off real nice....but entirely flat black. It would look EVIL. Also... in what shape is your windshield? If you wouldn't mind making a small profit, we could trade windshields. Mine has a crack in it, up on the top tinted part, passenger side. Considering new ones are $915, I'd gladly buy a used one in good shape from you. We could trade, only I could give you $200 or so. Anyway, good luck! - Rob |

The paint's not too good on the hood and the roof. Real paint won't fit the budget, so we'd already considered spray. Flat black was the idea, though we were considering only the top half. We'll see how it looks.
I think the windshield is good, although it sounds like a lot of work. I'd be a little afraid of braking it during swap out- we'd both have a mess. Wouldn't shipping across the country for 2 windshields be outrageous? I think it would kill the deal. I like your trade parts idea! I'm convinced the way a lot of folks get through this challenge is creative rules interpretation. -Paul |

this is beyond cool.
Can you do modifications to the frame? Like remove some of the "safety" cross members that subaru has in there? Those things are EXTREMELY heavy. Remove re-inforcement bars on the bumper....that sort of stuff??

Bumper reinforcement gone.
I have not yet discovered any such disposable frame cross members. Can you be a bit more specific? Are you referring to cross members which are for crash safety ratings, or do they assist with unibody stiffening for performance? I might part with the former for the track, but not the later. |

It is a 92 so I might be mistaken. I'm pretty sure the later years have structural supports for the steering wheel to allow for it to collapse during a collision, and I think there's beams in the doors to stop them from collapsing into the cabin.
Is this so on a 92?

The steering column is on our target list (money). The door panels are inegrally welded into the doors.

Another suggestion from Rob: HOLE SAW. About 1.5 inches in diameter. All the non structural metal (interior door metal, hood bracing, etc), CUT HOLES. MORE HOLES! MORE HOLES THE MERRIER! Just don't do it on the frame. What'd be REALLY trick is if you only cut holes where you COULDNT SEE THEM. Like underneath the door.... where it closes. The infamous SILVER BULLET 66 Coronet Hemi drag car used this method.

Sawsall Time
*cough* A bunch of people wanted to see what an SVX convertable would look like *cough*
I think repainting would be counterproductive by adding more weight. You could sand the old paint down to the primer, then paint with like two coats of spray paint, and lose weight. Might also want to see if you can get smaller/lighter wheels from a junkyard cheap. Check this site for ideas http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=776885

I can't believe you suggested a hole saw.
There is a convertible on this site. Technically, the rules require us to us the roof. -Paul |

Well good, you can't cut the roof on the SVX. It'll probably kill the handling of the car dramatically ..............I couldn't imagine it. and the whole extremely low COD would be non-existent.
I like the hole saw idea.......how bout a plasma cutter?

Okay, I think I'm going the have to stay away from this thread. All this talk of hole saws, "stripping down" and so forth is making me queezy.

I'm not going to chop it up. I basically like what Subaru did. I am going to try to respect it. When we are through we will be driving a car which is completely identifiable as an SVX. Just a low budget one that moves quickly. Besides, can you imagine what a few teenage boys with hole saws and sawzalls could do?? I'm having trouble breathing.
Sorry Randy- I think I triggered something unsightly in a few folks!! |
