Smile I got one!!! (not a deer)

Well, I am now home with my New 92 LS-L!!!

Thanks to Ben for bringing this beauty to my attention. This is the one that he posted about the other week.

First thing is wash/wax tomorrow. Then try to get the drivers window to work and remove what is left of the window tinting. This week sometime it needs tires and a preventative Trans Oil Change.

I've spent the last few weeks looking through a lot of the old posts and the lockers, this is a very educational board when it comes to the SVX.

It has 97,000 miles, not sure when the cam belts were done?
Is this an "interference" engine. How scared do I have to be of a bad belt. Will it just leave me stranded or am I looking at something more catostrophic.

Thanks

congrats. you sound like i felt when i got mine.

if your cambelt breaks, which it probably wont, you will be very stranded. a new belt will cost you over a c note and you might want to disassemble the the drive belts and cam cover so whoever you take it to to retime it wont charge you as much for labor after you tow it in.

you could do it all yourself, but its my opinion that its very difficult to install while keeping the cams PERFECTLY aligned.

personally i would worry about other things than the belts.

Dave, there has been a lot of discussion about whether it is an interference engine or not. The books say "non-interference" but most people say there is no such thing. It's recomended to be changed at 60k intervals so it *should* have been done. I did mine three weeks ago along with my waterpump. Not too hard at all, but it helps to have two people and lots of time. Alignment really is no problem, there's marks on the back of the timing belt cover as well as on the pulleys (three total). The driver's side window probably does not work because of a little plastic piece called the "sleeve lock regulator", should run you about $15 at a dealer. To check if this is the problem, take the door panel off (total of 6 screws, leave the wires connected) and push the button for the window (make sure car is in 'On'). If the wire moves but the window doesn't, this is your problem. If the wire doesn't move you may just need to replace a fuse, or you could need a new motor.

Congrats, and welcome to the network

Hmmm, in the original post it said 109k, but you said it has 97k?

P.S. Forgot *if* the belt broke, you would be stranded, but besides that it *shouln't* do any serious damage. Figure about $600 for labor to fix but some people have reported up to $1000, they'll do the water pump at the same time.

P.P.S. Where exactly in PA are you?

that little piece of plastic is closer to $180, and comes with a free mounting bracket.
seriously when i checked with the dealer i couldnt get that piece by itself.

the rate i got for cam belt service was $320, due to labor time. if you due most of it yourself you can save some dough.

and yes, there are nice little marks on the belt and the sprockets but keeping them all still while trying to get the belt on and tighten it (by hand) is very difficult if you dont have experience.

You didn't check with me The part number is 62101PA081 for the piece. The "free mounting bracket" is the window regulator. Did they do the water pump with the T-belt? If so you got yourself a pretty good deal. The belt is about $80 and the pump is another $80.

P.S. Your dealer is stupid, but so is mine, which is why I don't go there unless I need to. They told me that I couldn't get the part and had to get the whole assembly, then they looked at me funny when I came in with the part number

werd.
ill see about getting that part.
as for getting a good deal, i did all the work with a friend. no labor fees.
320 is just the standard charge of replacing the cam belt and putting everything back together. it was posted on the wall in the part center with other overpriced tune-up jobs.

Just so nobody is confused.... I believe we're talking about timing belts, not cam belts.

Right?

Thanks for all the replies

Shot - No deer, just a 92 pearly

NikFu - As long as it isn't going to tear the engine apart, yes the timing belts are the least of my problems.

Burgundy - I recently helped a friend change the belts on his EA-82 (old soob) engine and am planning to tackle the next change on my Legacy and now the SVX.
-Thanks for the info on the window, but I can't hear the motor running at all and the other three work fine, so I think either a switch/wire problem or a motor problem, but I will certainly be rooting for the $15 white clip.
-As for the mileage I did buy it from a used car dealer and there was a couple of weeks between the first post and when I bought it. Actually I think the dealer just got some of the info confused at first. When Ben first saw the car it was completely blocked in and he got the info from the dealer, when we went to see it the next day, and they got it unblocked, we found that it had 97,xxx.
-Cressona is a small town just outside of Pottsville (Yeungling) which is a small town between Harrisburg and Scranton.

Chicane - Yeah, timing belts. I'm sorry I thought they were the same.

Thanks again for the answers, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions, and then hopefully I'll be able to help others with answers.

Shot King - Your trips through Pottsville, what did you do to deserve that punishment??

Burgundy - It wasn't the white clip, see my post in the Tech forum...

first of all, congrats!

second of all make sure your timing belt is on correctly....i know the belt that was on my car when i bought it was not correctly aligned. i did a 1/4 trial before and after(not knowing there was an issue with it, and once finding out, wanted to see if there was a difference), and there was about 1 sec difference...

third of all, good luck!
