Transmission Cooler Install

I know this question has come up several times but I have not been able to find the detail I am looking for in any of the archives. So if someone wants to direct me to an existing response to this, that would be great.

I recently had my transmission fluid flushed with synthetic (I have a 96 with 40,000 miles - just purchased it. Missed my 92 that was totaled some years ago). I'm thinking about installing a cooler. All I need from someone who has installed one and has had positive results, are some detailed instructions on how to install it (or a strong suggestion that I have a transmission shop do it), and a suggestion on a size to buy (I've seen several in JC Whitney that are 3/4 inches wide with varying lengths and widths). It makes sense to me to bypass the existing radiator, but I'm flexible. In theory it doesnt seem like it would be difficult to install, but then again, I've gotten myself into trouble in the past with that attitude.

Oh, one last question - assuming I dont bypass the existing radiator, wouldnt I need to add another quart or so (over and above the recommended amount), since the fluid would now have a longer path to travel?

Thanks!

Welcome to the site.

There are some different configurations on the flows from the transmission to the coolers in the How-To Documents. It is on the upper right hand side of the page.

Most of the members have installed a filter (also in How-To) when they installed the cooler. This way you can install a temp gague sending unit in the filter and moniter the temps. Look the information over, and then ask your questions - I am sure you will have them. The stock cooler removes heat quicker than the air cooler, so I would run through it first, and then through the air cooler in the grill. Good luck. Oh, and yes, you will have to add some more fluid after installing what ever you do.

Welcome to the zoo, Larry, from another Ellicott City-ite.
I had a 16,000 GVW B&M cooler (50 bucks-ish on internet) installed by Dorsey transmission (85 bucks) over two years & 45K ago on my '92. Squeezed it between radiator & A/C condenser & is installed in parallel with original in-radiator cooler. There are 501 opinions in here as to what works best. No tranny demolition for me so far.

Regards, Ron.

There are 2 popular B&M coolers, Part# 70268, and 70255. I think the 70268 is the larger unit(I installed the larger unit) and will only fit between condenser and Rad. The smaller unit can actually be installed in front of the Condenser, you can even install 2 of them in front of condenser.
I have chosen the option of trany to Rad cooler to Air cooler back to trany. Filter still to be added.

FYI, the option between the condenser and Rad is very tight, and must be done carefully as not to let the new Trany cooler rub/vibrate against the radiator, or it will eventually cause a leak, and those rads are not cheap.

I have also seen the larger Trany cooler mounted under the front fender directly in front of the tire, facing down. Makes a lot of sense, but what out for those Parking lot curbs.
