My car shifts at 6250, but I heard it should at 7000

When I floor the car it will ALWAYS without exception whatsoever shift at 6250. Several times I've heard that it should shift at 7000. What could be the problem? Could this be something because it is a 92 and later they had a higher redline on later years? This does it in all modes of the transmission, D 3 2 & 1 even in manual mode. It surprised me when I had the car in 1 once I reached 6250 it shifted to second gear. I never knew cars would do that.

I got a question for you too:

Do you know the price tag on the tranny can be as high as a 92 SVX?

to satisfy my curiousity, what does everybody else's 92 shift at when it is floored in power mode with the transmission in 3? (reason for the tranny in 3 is porter said his won't go up to 7000 when in d, but only in the ones below that he thinks)

I know all about the transmission woes, I just got mine back from the tranny shop friday after getting it re-rebuilt. Seems when the tranny guy asked subaru for every tsb dealing with the tranny they didn't give him the one that talks about a redesigned pinion gear? and idler gear. He ordered all the parts and they gave him the newly designed pinion gear, and the old style idler gear. They meshed, but not quite smoothly without putting a big load on the bearings. So after 6 months they started whining almost as bad as my wheel bearings.

i've been getting shifts at 6250 as well. seems like the redline is only there for decoration, since there's no possible way that we can run past it. i had actually thought about figuring out a way to install a manually-adjustable rev limiter so i could limit revs to like maybe 4500 or 5k just to keep things safe, but dial it up to 6500 in the event of an emergency such as pulling up at a stoplight next to a loudmouthed civic

I'm thinking that this is something unique to the 92s and possible 93s. I have heard about 5 different times people mentioning revving their engine to 7000 but it has always been in 94 or newer engines. If you look at 0-60 times the 92 is about .3 seconds faster than 94s and on, so there must have been some sort of engine change, but I don't understand why the 0-60 would be slower unless the hp significantly drops off after 6000.

In Drive the tranny will shift at about 6K RPM. However, if you put it in 1st gear and leave it there, the tranny will shift at higher RPMs( somewhere near 6500) to prevent over-revving. That may get the SVX closer to that elusive 6.9 second 0-60 times quoted in some of the magazines?!?!?

5400 rpm was the power peak per this article in my locker.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...3F%3F/1213.jpg

Spinning the engine up tighter than this only makes sense to avoid falling out of the powerband when shifting (rev thru 5400 rpm, shift and avoid revs dropping too far below 5400 rpm)

Well, that and the sound the EG33 makes when wound up!

so manual mode 1st gear and stomp it

if it goes into protect mode this sounds like the ideal way to max performance. I just love pissing of young punks (usually in hondas) they pull along a gray hair and think no problem. I leave it in 1st manual mode then stomp on it and say good bye!

Check out the dyno test thread for the SVX. This shows that the power starts to drop off before 6000 rpm. Faster speed is obtained if shifting is around 6000 rpm. I wonder if porting and polishing would help increase the HP in this higher rev range?

One theory: when shifting 1-2 @6000 RPM the revs drop to about 4000 in second ( below peak torque #)

Shift @6500+ RPM and revs drop somewhere 4200-4300? RPM which is closer to peak torque.

I read an article awhile ago in SCC and it said ( for the Ford Focus) shifting short of redline gave a higher torque # in 2nd at that RPM. Shifting at redline put it PAST peak torque in 2nd (making it slower). But in our case, I *think* our torque curve is flatter and would give better acceleration with higher shift points since we hit 2nd gear before peak torque, not after peak torque.

Any thoughts??
