Unhappy whirring noise a low revs

hi.. we had a real serious cold snap here about a week ago. the morning after, my car sounded very "hollow" when i started it, and after letting it warm up a couple minutes, there was this whirring sound coming from the front end as i accelerated from like 1100 to 3000 rpms. once the car warmed all the way up i took it for a dash to 6000 rpms and after 3500 the noise either went away or was drowned out by the sound of the engine and exhaust. i'm hoping that it's something as simple as a belt, but i guess you never know.. any suggestions?

Take the alternator belt off, then start the car and see if the noise goes away. If not, take the AC belt off and try again. If the noise is still there, then it would be something in the timing belt area, possibly the water pump, or deeper in the engine. Belts will squeal, but they don't whir, so I'd suspect something metal (like a bearing) and probably costly.
