Can/Has it been done?

I have had this idea in my head for a way to make the SVX into more a performance machine. I know everyone loves the 3.3 but I was thinking of a complete wrx sti swap, driveline and all. just an idea but do y'all think it can even be done?

Re: Can/Has it been done?

I haven't read of it being done, but I can't see why it wouldn't be possible. Mechanically everything should bolt up, with a 6 speed you can use the stock SVX driveshaft and (I believe) rear differential. If the EG33 will drop into any EJ series chassis, which it seems to, then the EJ2x7 should drop right into the SVX. Plus you'll have extra space in front of the engine.

Problems I foresee consist of intercooler/charge pipe location and possibly needing to find a shorter radiator. Perhaps you could get away with using the SVXs rad.

Then of course is the wiring, typically the most convoluted party of any Subaru swap. I'd grab an OBD1 SVX, but that's because I have to pass an OBD2 check with '96 and newer vehicles here in NH.

At that point you'll have all the power you can afford, and there seems to be solutions for upgrading to STI suspension.

It's still a heavy car though, a few hundred lbs more than the STI, so it won't be QUITE as fast at similar power levels, but still much faster than stock. Please keep us updated if you go that route. If you're near southern NH I'd be happy to help, sounds like a fun adventure.

Re: Can/Has it been done?

physically it will all bolt up, wiring would be doable, just backwards of what most do, H6 into a stock H4 car, has anyone actually done it.. yes but the project stalled out on wiring and then was parted out and sold I believe

Re: Can/Has it been done?

Just about anything can be done if you throw enough money at it...

I'd rather see someone power up a stock EG33, and of course do an MT swap as well, all in the same car...

For example, I'd like to see someone install one of these SCs onto an EG33:

There seems to be a few SVX folks on here that appear to have the skills to do it. I would think the combo of this SC and an MT on an SVX would really make it entertaining to drive!

A LOT of that extra weight is the EG33 and the 4EAT, I bet with a STi motor and transmission, it would weigh in right about the same as the STI

I believe the 6 speeds are deceptively heavy, as heavy as the 4eat's anyway. That plus intercooler/piping and a turbo had me figuring on minimal weight savings from a drivetrain swap. Just speculation of course.

Edit: from what I can tell the eg weighs around 400 pounds, and the ej257, with its aluminum block, weighs about 200 pounds. That's without the turbo stuff, but it's still a substantial weight savings on the front end.

Re: Can/Has it been done?

Talking on this is about like we were thinking back in the late 90's: Why not put a 91-94 EJ22T block in it, and boost it to 30psi on stock internals with tmic...? wasn't done then, and probably same now.

Just saying.
