Re: reinforced front top mounts done

Well done, sir. As for the clunking sound you're having a hard time narrowing down, have you looked at the mounts for the engine crossmember? Maybe there's a little play there that clunks. Like the front version of the bushings that the $15/15 min mod stiffens up.

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

has anyone here with koni's inspected their stock mounts? I recently installed bumpstops and had to remove the springs to do so...upon inspection the strut shaft really mangles/digs into if not completely destroys the bearing within the strut mount. Anyone else experience this?

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

How come? Do you have the correct (stock) thick (over 5mm) cone shaped washer against the bearing inner race? And it is the correct way around?

I know the Koni rod (part inside the bearing) is 14.85mm, stock is very close to 15mm and the bearing is 15.00 mm. So there's a bit more clearance than optimum, but the nut should be able to hold it just fine.

On the PU sealant thing - I will remove them. It does not adhere to the rubbe well, two days of driving and it is starting to come off (was cured all the was thru). It also makes the mount too stiff IMO - there's quite a bit of bending stress on the damper rod thru the whole wheel travel.

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

Are you referring to the metal top cap that sits over the spring? That's the piece that appears to be tearing into the mount's inner race

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

There should be a thick cone shaped spacer beween the spring seat and the bearing. See attachment - item 3. Part# is 20326AA000 - should cost around $3 at your friendly dealer .

If you are missing this the spring seat will foul against the "top hat". Also, the nut will not tighten the tope end, should rattle quite a bit.

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

So should I be using the spacer (item 3) AND the spring seat (item 4) in conjunction with the Koni/Ground Control spring setup???

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

Sorry - I know nothing about the ground control set up. I though you used the stock spring arrangement. Just forget all I said

Ice?

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

Not sure. I used camber/caster topmounts in the front, not the stock topmounts, and had no issues.

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

Update,

While trying to trace down the knock I accidentally sheared off the tip of one strut - the threaded part....

I bought another pair from Dayle - installed them both last night and now the knock is gone.

I will tear the broken one apart when I get the chance and see if there's anything obvious which might cause the knock. It was on both sides and could be heard by even pushing the fron up and down by hand. Same thing with the OEM struts (10.000km on them, 10 years). Very annoying.

The new pair looks a bit different externally too, but has the same numbers on it. See photo, sorry for quality.

Weird thing.

Re: reinforced front top mounts done

Wait so are you saying the knock was coming from the strut itself?
